The Royal Tea: What You Need To Know About Harry & Meghan’s Interview with Oprah

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NCSU chapter.

In case you didn’t know, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, aka Harry and Meghan, recently sat down with Oprah for a tell-all interview. The interview aired on CBS on March 7, 2021.

From start to finish, there was a lot to unpack. At the beginning of the interview, Oprah reassured the audience that no topic was off-limits, and that the couple was not receiving compensation for the interview. For the first 45 minutes, Oprah sat down with Meghan separately to ask questions people have been dying to know the answers to. Here are the key points to take away from Oprah’s interview with just Meghan

Meghan and Harry got married in secret three days before their Royal Wedding.

Meghan revealed to Oprah that she and Harry were married by the archbishop of Canterbury three days before their wedding. Their royal wedding took place on May 19, 2018 at Windsor Castle. Meghan stated that the two called the archbishop and said “Look, this spectacle is for the world, but we want our union between us.”

Kate Middleton made Meghan cry the week of her wedding, not the other way around.

Months after the royal wedding, tabloids claimed that Meghan made Kate cry because of the flower girl dress that Princess Charlotte was going to wear. However, Meghan revealed that the opposite happened; Kate made Meghan cry. While Meghan revealed this new information to Oprah, she went on to say that Kate apologized with flowers and a note and that she had forgiven Kate.

Meghan was denied help by the Institution when having suicidal thoughts.

One shocking point of the interview is when Meghan revealed that she was having suicidal thoughts while pregnant with Archie. She stated that she went to ask for help from the Institution and they replied that they were sorry, but it would be bad press for her to seek out professional help.

After sitting down with just Meghan, Harry joined the two to talk more. Here are the key points from the conversation with both Prince Harry and Meghan:

The couple’s second child is a girl and is due in the summer!

Harry will now be a #girldad and his reaction when telling Oprah that they are expecting a girl was priceless. The couple is not planning on having any more children after their daughter is born.

There were conversations with Harry on how dark Archie’s skin would be once he was born.

During the interview with just Meghan, she touched on the fact that conversations were brought up to Harry about how dark their son would be once he was born. Meghan did not reveal who made this comment because it would “be damaging to them.” Once Harry joined the interview, he restated that these conversations were brought up. The day after the interview, Oprah told CBS that “He [Prince Harry] did not share the identity with me, but he wanted to make sure that I knew, and if I had an opportunity to share it, that it was not his grandmother nor his grandfather.”

Harry was cut off financially from his family in the beginning of 2020.

Harry revealed that during the beginning of COVID-19, his family cut him off financially. This resulted in the couple relying on Harry’s trust fund left to him by his late mother, Princess Diana.

This interview with Harry and Meghan revealed a lot of information in only two hours. Unaired clips since the interview have also been released. You can watch the full interview on CBS
