I hope that you are super excited about the New Year and this new semester ahead of us! I want to start by introducing myself, and the role that I will be playing as the new advice columnist for iHelp, the new advice column for Her Campus NCSU.

My name is Hannah Jones, and I am a sophomore here at NCSU majoring in Biology with a minor in Animal Science. My plan is to go to vet school upon graduation and become a small animal veterinarian. I love animals and, in addition, I love people, and I look forward to a career where I can minister to people by treating their beloved pets. I am from Maggie Valley NC up in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, so coming to a city like Raleigh has definitely been something of a transition for me. I went from a small town that I’m certain is kin to Mayberry to one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. Besides getting lost every time I go out driving, I absolutely love it here! Some of my favorite things to enjoy in my “free time”(as if college students know what that is) are spending time

outdoors around nature, babysitting, petsitting, playing the piano, good movies, and good food!

So that’s a little about me, now why did I tell you all that? Well…good question. As I said I am the new Her Campus advice columnist, and the truth of the matter is that in addition to all the aforemore mentioned hobbies I also really enjoy writing! I particularly love writing about life and it’s craziness and sharing with others my life experiences and the lessons I have learned so far on my journey. I find great fulfillment in making people feel better about life and helping them sort out a positive way to handle all the wacky, random, and unpredictable situations that life loves to throw at them.

Let’s face it, no one is running a perfect life and sometimes we just need a little help or encouragement to get through tough times. So that’s why I’m here! I want to be a fresh perspective for you! The bottom line is (unlike your professors) I’m telling you it’s ok not to know the answer! We are all carbon- based humans and sometimes we just don’t know…it’s that simple.

So if you find yourself in that predicament, chill, remember that life gets complicated for everyone at times, and write me about your issue. I would love to help! Have a wonderful semester, study hard, and go Wolfpack!!

Here is our first ever Her Campus iHelp Advice question and answer:

Dear Hannah,

I am having a problem managing my money as a student. I still want to enjoy some “fun stuff”, but I don’t have a job, and my money is stretched super thin. What are some fun things you do around here that don’t cost a lot of money?

Carla

Dear Carla,

I can totally relate to your situation! I am not working this semester either, and it can be hard to stretch those dollars, but with a little creativity you can make a small amount go far.

Some of it will depend upon your personal interest, but for me the outdoors is one of the greatest sources of enjoyment and the best part is it’s 100% free! Grab some friends and head over to Pullen Park for the day. It’s a great place to have a picnic, play some tennis, enjoy the beautiful lake or even just take a jog around the paved trails.

If nature isn’t your thing catch a movie at the Campus Cinema, which is located in Witherspoon Student Center. The movies are only 2 bucks for students. Not bad, eh? If you prefer the privacy of your dorm room rent a flick from Redbox for just 99 cents, pick up a box of popcorn and your favorite candy at one of the c-stores on campus and enjoy! This could easily come in at under $10.

For a more creative approach, if you have access to a place where you can cook get a couple of friends and set a budget of say $15 or whatever you can afford that weekend. Go to the grocery store and see how thrifty you can be as you try to buy enough food to make a complete meal for all of you. If you have at least two friends the math works out to be only 5 bucks each. It’s a way to have some fun with friends, and at the same time make a pretty unique dinner. (Yay for non-cafeteria food!)

Hope these ideas are helpful, Carla!
