Many people dread the New Year and feel like another year has come and gone. But recently, I have seen the New Year as an opportunity to reflect on the good and bad of the year past. New year, new me, but seriously. The New Year is a great way to incorporate new and healthy habits into your routine that have been missing before. So, here are some of the habits that I’m bringing into 2023:

  1. Flossing – This is such a simple and beneficial habit that I stopped doing a while back, but not anymore! All it takes is one minute after brushing my teeth before bed and I am going to stick to it.
  1. Spending time outside – As it gets warmer outside in the upcoming weeks, I am going to utilize the nice grassy area outside my dorm. Spending time in nature and in the sun is great after a long day of classes or in front of a screen.
  1. Reading – Reading is such a good habit to pick up, and it’s even better if you are reading books you enjoy. I have always been into reading for fun, but I wasn’t prioritizing it. This year I have set a reading goal of 20 minutes a day minimum and set a goal to read at least 15 books this year. I am using the Bookly app to track all my reading. I am setting aside some time in the morning to get this done. The more I read, the more I get into it, and eventually it will be easy-peasy for me!
  1. Drinking more water – Another beneficial habit that I am working on. Filling up my water bottle every day, filling up my Brita regularly, taking water breaks while doing homework – it can go a long way!
  1. Going to the gym – Utilizing my newly freed time in the afternoons, my friend and I have committed to going to the gym this semester. After all, we are paying for it and it is a super close and great resource. Showing up is the hardest part, so having someone I can depend on and hold accountable is a key part of keeping up with this habit. Once I am there, I find something I enjoy and stick to it! Anything is better than nothing.

And finally,

  1. Setting aside time for fun stuff – This is a broad and personal habit, but an important one. Sometimes I can get really wrapped up in school and feel like it is the only thing taking up my time. Calling it a day, putting away my homework at a certain time, and doing something fun is really good for me. Recently, I have started playing Minecraft with my friends and playing little games on my phone to distract me from anything stressful for the time being. Taking time away from school can feel stressful or unproductive, but taking time for yourself and your interests is necessary!

At the end of the day, taking care of yourself is always a priority. New Year’s resolutions can be scary, but you can always adjust them to your own personal needs. And don’t beat yourself up about it – there is always next year! 😉
