Denzel Goodlin and Words of Wisdom

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NCCU chapter.

It’s rare to meet someone filled with so much positive energy that it radiates from their mere presence, but that’s how we feel about Sophomore Class President, Denzel Goodlin.

Denzel is a Social Work major hailing from Woodbridge, Virginia; he’s probably most famous for his contagious smile and bright personality. It’s nearly impossible to not cheer up when Denzel is around! He aspires to be a Full-time Minister and keeps himself busy around campus. In addition to serving as your current Sophomore Class President, Denzel is actively involved in The Centennial Scholars Program, 100 Black Men, and the University Honors Program.

We had the honor of interviewing Denzel and were so impressed by his wisdom (as usual!)

What is your vision as Sophomore Class President? I would like to see more unity and self-love among our class. I think how we interact with one another is a reflection of how we feel about ourselves. My platform DWYR (Developing Who You Are) is focused on pushing people to go beyond mediocrity and aspire to be the best version of themselves possible because the world needs them.

What impact would you like to have on the university before you leave? I would like to see more influenced by the small things I did. Not the programs or events I organized, but by what I demonstrated as a man and as an eagle.

Why do you love NCCU and what is your favorite thing about attending an HBCU? I love the intimacy and the resources available at NCCU. My favorite thing about HBCU’s are the traditions. PWI’s don’t get a 10:40 Break, a chicken Wednesday, or a late-night breakfast turned party for homecoming.

What are some of the most important things you’ve learned in your college experience thus far? Take breaks. Breaks are vital. Do not get involved everything. Appreciate the few friends you have. Everyone you shake hands with and smile to is not your friend. Learn to value the small things in life and the few people who genuinely care about you.

How do you practice self-care? PRAYER IS EVERYTHING!! God is my strength. I workout in the mornings and/or evenings. I take 8 hour rests serious. Constant communication with God really helps. I try to implement a day where I do nothing during the day so my body and mind can be at rest and recover.

How do you stay so positive and upbeat?! I love life and I love making people smile! My gift is influence and compassion. I realize daily that someone could have it worse than I do. Someone is deeply struggling with something. Someone is battling serious insecurity issues. I like to remind people that they are someone and that they matter. They are not alone and they have something worth living for. Plus nothing helps your spirit more than some good 90s sitcoms, great freiends with great energy, and some uplifting music to get your day started!
