Future Teacher Bae Alert!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NCAT chapter.

Jasmine is a Secondary Education student with a concentration in English from the Bull City (the real 919); Durham, North Carolina. She also is a substitute teacher in Durham and Guilford County.

When did you realize you wanted to be a teacher?

I was a sophomore in high school. I was depressed, and my English teacher actually counseled me and helped me through it. I realized that I wanted to help people like she helped me. Also, I was pretty good at English, so I decided a high school English teacher would be cool. Plus, teachers get holidays and summers off!

I’ve also had some pretty bad teachers, who hate their jobs and it a disservice to the students. They deserve someone to teach them, love them, and care about them because sometimes they don’t get that at home. Teachers serve as social workers, counselors, and nurses and I think that is so remarkable.

Why English?

I love English!

It’s really cool because there’s not really a wrong answer as long as you can provide proof from the text. English truly is an art, with all the literary deceives you can use to create art!

What’s it like to be a substitute teacher?

I love subbing. There is never a time I will sub, and not have a story to tell my friends. The kids sometimes misbehave and give me a hard time, but it’s nothing I can’t handle. They’re usually really funny. I usually sub for middle schools. Seventh grade is my favorite grade to sub for because even though I’m still young, we’re enough years apart that they still respect me enough and realize that I am still an adult. I don’t do high school too much because I’m so close to their age. I was just in high school three years ago! It’s funny because I want to be a high school teacher, but it’ll be different once I graduate. Elementary school is the worst! They are so needy and everything that comes out of their mouths is either a lie, something mean, or they’re telling on some one else. Other than that, I love subbing. I always say that it’s just like teaching but without the hard work: lesson plans, meetings, and grading!

I am a GRADUATING Senior majoring in Secondary English Education from the Bull City, Durham, NC. I plan to be an English Teacher that encourages learning and wants to reform public education. I am very silly and playful and laid back. I believe that we are here for a good time, not a long time, so we should take risks and enjoy life.
I am Alexis Hooper, President of the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University chapter of Her Campus.
