Are You Ready to Cuddle? Cuffing Season Is Back

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NCAT chapter.

With October almost over, it’s time to kiss that warm weather goodbye and get ready for more Fall and Winter. It’s also time to get prepared for Cuffing Season. For those who are unfamiliar with the term, cuffing season is defined by Urban Dictionary as, “during the fall and winter months when people who would normally rather be single or promiscuous find themselves, along with the rest of the world, desiring to be “cuffed” or tied down by a serious relationship. The cold weather and prolonged indoor activity causes singles to become lonely and desperate to be cuffed.”

So basically, Cuffing Season is the time of year when it’s just too cold to go out and do anything other than lounge around and binge watch a show on Netflix. Dating coach Tracey Steinberg says it’s the time “When things get cold…everyone is in ten layers and most people don’t want to be running around outside. So it’s nice to have someone to snuggle [and] drink hot chocolate with.”

It’s not just popular knowledge, Cuffing Season is possibly even supported by scientific facts. According to Charles Darwin’s Survival of the Fittest theory, early humans who got together in the winter had much better survival rates. “Over time, all humans evolved to couple up in the winter because it was a behavior that ensured the species’ continued survival and successful reproduction in future generations.”

If you’re still not buying it, take into consideration the fact that most babies are born in July and August. This means that the sexual actions that lead to these pregnancies and births occurred during the fall and winter months. Some may simply chalk it up to cabin fever, but it’s hard to deny that the pressure from society to have a significant other is at an all-time high when it’s cold outside.

But when exactly is Cuffing Season? There’s no official timeline, but many agree that it is in full effect from December to March. In college terms, it begins towards the end of fall semester, and ends midway through spring semester. The photo below breaks the season further down into more specific dates and deadlines that should be made aware of.

If you’re still not on board with the legitimacy of this movement, maybe Fabolous can persuade you with these lyrics to his song “Cuffin’ Season,” been naughty all year trying to end it nicely……Summer ho*s turning into winter wifeys. Now that you’ve been informed, get prepared for this year’s upcoming Cuffing Season!

Hi everyone! I am a sophomore at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University who should be majoring in Weddings, but is actually a Journalism & Mass Communications student with a concentration in Multimedia. Originally I am from Woodbridge, Virginia, which is about 30 minutes south of our nation’s capital. I have lived here all my life, but I’m not afraid to branch out and explore the world. This past summer I studied abroad in Sydney, Australia to engage and immerse myself in Australian culture. The experience was phenomenal and I’m already counting down the days until I can return that beautiful country. Check out my Tumblr, Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook.
