For thousands of years, astrology has been used and considered as a way of life. More recently, within the last fifty years, horoscopes have become very popular.

So what, exactly, are horoscopes? According to dictionary.com, horoscopes are a diagram of the heavens, showing the relative position of planets and the signs of the zodiac, for use in calculating births, foretelling events in a person’s life, etc. Although there is no scientific evidence to prove the accuracy of astrology, why do so many people, including myself, believe in it? Stress is a huge component to the increased use of astrology. According to a study conducted in 2014, millenials are one of the most stressed generations. Stress and uncertainty about the future lead to young people seeking out meaning in their lives. In times of distress, people seek an explanation for what is going on in the world, and for many, astrology can help with that. In this case, astrology is a perfect tool. For those who believe in it, astrology is used to explain events in their life, their personality, and where they might be going in the future. Astrology can act as a sense of clarity and relief.

With the rise in social media, astrology related content has become more popular, whether it be mercury in retrograde memes or “your sign as…” posts. Young people, now more than ever, are fixated on astrology. Frankly, there is nothing wrong with that. It doesn’t harm anyone and if it helps calm the nerves of many anxious young people, then so be it.
