Rating Sub Chains Based on my Personal Experience

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MTSU chapter.

I was thinking about wanting to go out to eat, but unfortunately I cannot because of Coronavirus. So I started reminiscing about the restaurants I miss from the good ol’ days when we could go anywhere we want and started thinking about how much I love Quiznos and hate Jimmy John’s. I realized that I have very strong opinions on sub sandwich restaurants, so I decided to rate some of the more well known chains.

Firehouse Subs: 7/10

Growing up, I always saw commercials for Firehouse Subs and thought everything looked amazing. However, there wasn’t one of their restaurants within 100 miles of where I lived. When I finally moved to a more metropolitan area, I was able to finally try the subs I was dreaming of. I have to say that Firehouse Subs has my favorite sandwiches out of all of the restaurants listed. However, it is not a 10/10 because the one location in my city is inconvenient to get in and out of, and I don’t like the vibes of the restaurant.

Jersey Mike’s: 3/10

I have only had Jersey Mike’s catered, so I can’t rate the experience of the restaurant. However, I will say that there was not a single sandwich that I didn’t have to remove something from, whether it was because I didn’t like it (pickles) or it was low quality (tomatoes). The quality of the food I have had by them does not inspire me to give the actual restaurant a chance.

Jimmy John’s: 1/10

I will start by saying that I hate Jimmy John’s. One of the major parts of a sub sandwich is the bread. The bread at Jimmy John’s is too small (I like my carbs), most kinds are lacking flavor, and it is too chewy. There is also not very much in the way of fillings. The only things that Jimmy John’s has going for it are the number of locations and easy delivery options.

Subway: 8/10

Subway is the standard for chain sub shops. It’s not amazing, but it’s not bad. Subway offers many options, not only with fillings, but with types of bread and drinks (depending on the location). The major thing that Subway has going for it is the innumerable amount of locations. When I first moved to my current city, Murfreesboro, there were 20 Subways in town. For an example of the amount of locations, there is a Subway in the Walmart I work at and, up until a few months ago, there was another Subway less than 300 ft away next to Walmart. Subway is also notorious for good coupons, so that’s always a plus.

Quiznos: 10/10

Quiznos has always been my favorite sub shop. Most of it is nostalgia, but I feel like Quiznos offers the most customization and best quality of food. Growing up, there were a lot more Quiznos around, but the closest one to my hometown was still 30 minutes away. The town that the Quiznos was in was also where all of my doctors (primary, dentist, optometrist, etc…) were, so on the days that I got pulled out of school to go to an appointment my dad always took me there before going back to school. In highschool, my choir would also stop where the Quiznos (and McDonalds and Dairy Queen) was on our way back from recording a song for the news channel during the holidays and for singing contests, so it is heavily associated with happy memories.

In closing, Quiznos is awesome and less locations should be closing and Jimmy John’s should be ashamed.
