Off the (Over)Beaten Path

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mt Holyoke chapter.

The job market is a daunting place for an underclasswoman. Sometimes it seems like all your friends are about to set off to big cities for thrilling, glamorous internships. Frankly, I think the emphasis on internships as early as the summer before college puts unnecessary stress and pressure on us underclasswomen. We’ve just recently been introduced to the collegiate world, why stress over an eight week long position where you’ll probably just do administrative work (a.k.a. “clerical” work)? Perhaps we should see summer as what it really is: a recess from the 8 months of nitty gritty academia. Let’s take a break ladies! This is not to say that you should sit on your behind all summer and pretend you’re getting paid. No way. Get off the couch and put some money in the bank. If the high stakes world of internships is not your style, I suggest a few alternate routes.

Clean Up on Aisle 5!

There’s nothing too glamorous about the grocery store unless you’re a Real Housewife of Beverly Hills. However, your hometown’s grocery store provides a steady income. You interact with people. You’re close to home. For me, part of summer is reconnecting with who I am at home, in my comfort zone. View the grocery store as a chance to be a local again.

Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah!

Maybe it’s time to get back to the basics this summer. Spend some time outside! If you love kids, the outdoors, or sharing your skills with others, try working at a summer camp. As a veteran camper and counselor, I can’t help but advise others to try camp. I won’t lie, it’s definitely hard work, but the effort is certainly worth the results. Whether you help a camper tie his shoes or help another flip her kayak, you are actively participating in someone else’s life in an incredibly positive way. Plus, camps often train you in new, specific program areas (Lifeguarding, climbing, weaving, etc.) Get to the woods, young lady and be a role model!

Hail the Alma Mater!

Can’t tolerate more than two weeks at home? Perhaps a job on campus is more your style. Staying on campus in the summer creates an opportunity to explore your college town, the night life, and gain experience in a particular
department or office. Use your school’s job search tool to search for on campus jobs. You might be surprised by the opportunities.
