How to Battle the New England Weather In Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mt Holyoke chapter.

It seems that Mother Nature is messing with our heads now that it’s officially Autumn. In
the morning, we wake up to a chilly 40 degrees, then as the day progresses, we find
ourselves sweltering under scarves, peacoats, and boots when it’s a balmy 70. The magic
word? Layers. Here are some tips to dressing appropriately for the fluctuating
temperatures:

1. Take the temperature high, subtract 5 degrees, and dress for that temperature. Then throw on a scarf, jacket, and warm socks.

2. Don’t wear anything too bulky because once the temperature reaches its high, you’ll end
up carrying that heavy peacoat for the rest of the day.

3. Wool scarves are your best friends. Scarves keep us nice and toasty in the cool weather
and winter fabrics like wool, cashmere, and fleece will keep you so much warmer than
cotton and silk.

4. Be a sock person. You don’t have to wear thick woolen ski socks, but ditch those ankle
socks for a mid-calf pair that will keep your ankles warm no matter what shoes you’re
wearing.

5. If you insist on wearing shorts or a cute skirt, match it with the right pair of tights. I like to
wear a pair of fancy lace tights with a pair of thick opaque tights so that I don’t have to
forgo fashion for warmth. You can even substitute tights for a pair of knee high socks!

Enjoy the autumn season and dress warmly!
