Being productive as a college student or just an adult in general is overwhelming. Regardless of your workload intensity, it’s important to find time throughout the semester to relax and celebrate small victories.

What is a “little treat”? Little treats, whether it be a small sweet or drink, are ways to reward yourself after completing a task. It’s a way to learn self-encouragement which can improve your confidence, work ethic, and mental health.

When should I reward myself? You should reward yourself for anything you consider a success, such as getting a good grade, completing a project, deep cleaning your room, etc. It is important, however, to reward yourself in moderation. Rewarding yourself for each small task can get expensive and not feel as deserving when you reward yourself for bigger tasks. Rewards are meant to help you learn resilience and healthy habits while staying productive.

Ways to reward yourself  How you reward yourself is up to your own discretion. This can depend on your schedule, budget, or just on how big of a task you complete. Here are some ideas on how to reward yourself.

  1. Buying your favorite beverage

This is the most common way people reward themselves. This can be a $7 Starbucks drink, or a $2 soda can. This is a fast and simple way to feel motivated .

  1. Flowers/plants

Buying yourself flowers or a new plant can make you feel special and proud of yourself. You can buy flowers at almost any grocery store and some stores even wrap them for you if you’d like!

  1. TV show/movie binge session

It’s easy to get distracted and procrastinate by watching shows. Setting aside time at the end of the day after completing tasks to watch a show or movie with your favorite snacks/food can provide comfort in knowing you have that guaranteed relaxation time.

  1. Baking

While baking may seem like another task in itself, it actually can serve as a break from staring at your computer or phone screen. You end up with a delicious treat you can share with your friends and/or family (or keep all for yourself).

  1. Retail therapy

Buying that one item that has been in your cart for weeks can feel very rewarding. You deserve something new such as a clothing piece, shoes, makeup, etc. Setting a reasonable limit is what makes this a healthy way to reward yourself.

It’s important to always take time each day to relax and practice self care. Little treats can be done in moderation after your successes. We are not meant to be productive 24/7, so buy (or make) yourself a little treat – you deserve it!
