Whether or not reading is something you enjoy, taking a few moments out of your day to experience poetry is definitely worth adding to your self-care routine. The reason why is words are extremely powerful and poetry can connect with you on a deeper level. The whole art of poetry is a form of psychology. The way the words appear on paper tangles us in a realm of emotions, thinking creatively and allowing us to learn a little more about ourselves.

These selections are all focused on topics that surround self-love and healing for you to gain more confidence.

  1. “I Love My Love” by Reyna Biddy

“You’re so much better and more beautiful than you give yourself credit for. Stop waiting for someone to validate who you are. You owe yourself some more recognition.” – Reyna Biddy

This poetry book is one of my favorite selections that I have read nearly 10 times. I personally love the raw emotion of these short poems and can deeply connect with her story in bits and pieces.

Biddy’s poems tell an extremely personal and inspirational story about her rough childhood while viewing her parents’ toxic relationship. Her main focus in this book is how loving yourself is important and so is all of the emotional reckonings that go along with that process. Her beautiful words take us through heartbreak, reflection and evolution, which provides us with the “journey towards self-love.” I highly recommend reading this book and taking Reyna Biddy along on your self-love journey.

  1. “Swimming Lessons” by Lili Reinhart

“I am the fighter. The one who keeps going and never takes the easy way out.” – Lili Reinhart

Lili Reinhart is not only an amazing actress, but she is also an advocate for mental health awareness. Her poetry collection takes us through the journey of battling depression and anxiety from fame as well as young love that comes with lots of heartbreak.

Her words are extremely captivating and deeply intimate, expressing the ups and downs of growing up. The poems are very short yet say so much. What really stood out to me while reading her book was her illustrations. It really sets the tone of what she is trying to capture. Her goal throughout the book is to encourage her readers to feel more confident in themselves, whether it’s physical, emotional or mental, and keeps her words full of emotion and inspiration. This is definitely a great purchase to add to your nightly self-care routine.

  1. “Milk and Honey” by Rupi Kaur

“You must enter a relationship with yourself before anyone else.” – Rupi Kaur

You must have heard of this modern masterpiece even if it was simply in passing! This is one of Rupi Kaur’s most famous books.

The provocative yet comforting, bite-sized yet profound poems are written about loving, hurting, breaking and healing. Her powerful words really sink in and connect with you on a deep level. She writes for all types of women and for all of the different versions of us within ourselves. Her illustrations are also extremely beautiful and capture the tone of what she hopes to convey. The inspiration behind the words deals with how to fight our problems in a positive way with the main takeaway of loving yourself before anyone else.

“If you don’t love yourself then you will have a hard time loving someone else.” This is definitely a powerful collection to carry with you on your journey toward self-love.
