10 Things TikTok “Deinfluenced” Me From Buying

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

One of the biggest trends on TikTok right now (and my current favorite) is the ‘deinfluencing’ trend – where creators tell you things they recommend you shouldn’t buy that are overhyped by other influencers.

TikTok has been one of the most influential apps when it comes to Gen Z purchasing habits. 61% of TikTokers tend to purchase products advertised by brands on TikTok.

This is due to the way ads are shown on TikTok, where they don’t really look like traditional advertisements we would see on our Instagram feeds. Some ads are mixed into your For You page with regular videos and a “sponsored” or “paid partnership” symbol added under the caption.

This move by the app is smart as we are more likely to purchase things recommended to us by other people. It makes us feel confident in our purchasing decisions knowing that someone else has tried it and liked it. It also makes us feel as though we are a part of something by owning the product marketed. It makes us feel as though we belong, and that is something everyone yearns for.

This trend is extremely important as it helps remind viewers that we do not need to constantly feed into the products being marketed to us as there are so many other cheaper (and probably better) alternatives out there. It can also be taken a step further as a reminder that we don’t need any of these products to begin with, and that society tends to make unnecessary purchases for the fun of it. Having these reminders allows society to hone in on making smarter spending decisions and to save money, especially during a stressful time economically.

This also goes beyond the scope of just purchasing through TikTok and is feeding into the “eat the rich” narrative. It has been an extremely popular topic of discussion, being shown in TV shows/movies such as “The White Lotus” and “The Menu.” I feel that society has lost the idea of the value of a dollar as we are so quick to make huge purchases without even thinking about the price.

Without further ado, here are the top 10 things I have been “deinfluenced” from purchasing:

1. Dyson Air Wrap

This is one of the easiest products to say no to. I believe that $600 for an all-in-one hair styling tool is absolutely ridiculous, considering all the “heatless” trends going around. I also have all of the products individually, so I personally don’t feel the need to go out and replace all of them with one product.

There are alternatives that are supposedly better according to TikTok, such as the Shark FlexStyle. Although it’s still pricey, it does beat the price of a car payment.

2. Bloom Nutrition Super Greens Powder

I have never trusted greens in a powder form. To me, it makes more sense to get all of the nutrients from the actual greens themselves. Nothing beats making a homemade green juice/smoothie.

The reason I feel this is a popular option is because it is less time consuming to throw a powder into water and froth it. A healthier option that I would consider is the Your Super Super Green Superfood Mix (now there’s a mouthful).

3. Stanley Cup

The most pointless purchase in my honest opinion. Yes, they’re cute and yes it’s convenient that it fits in the car cup holder, but I see that it leaks a lot and you need to buy a separate piece for it not to. Why would I do that?

I’ll stick to my Owala and Hydroflask.

4. Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream

Charlotte Tilbury is currently getting all the hype right now and I can definitely see why based on other products I’ve tried. But the moisturizer seems like such a scam to me. It seems like it’s good quality but the price is what brings it down. There are so many other alternatives that are so much cheaper and have the same ingredients and benefits that this moisturizer carries. The only logical reason I can think of to purchase it is due to the brand name.

There are so many cheaper options for moisturizers that can actually work wonders, such as The Ordinary and La Roche Posay.

5. Benefit Bene-Tint

I was expecting so much more than what this product gives. This product stains skin, is hard to blend and makes lips look dry.

I am sticking to my tried and true separate blush and lip products, the Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush and the Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Tinted Lip Oil (that can be purchased in matching colors). Although it’s more money to get both individually, it’s worth the money as the quality is phenomenal.

6. Drunk Elephant Protini Polypeptide Cream

I’ve tried this product previously but a very long time ago. This product didn’t do anything for my skin nor do I feel people buy it for the purpose of it. I feel that people want to buy it because it’s now a trend and it has cute packaging.

I still stick by my word on the moisturizers mentioned above, such as The Ordinary and La Roche Posay.

7. Dior Addict Lip Oil

I have considered purchasing this oil but have found so many other products that do the exact same thing for a cheaper price.

I love the Morphe Glassified Lip Oil and it’s so much cheaper. But I’m also super obsessed with the Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balms. Although not a lip oil, my lips have never been so hydrated while also appearing super glossy.

9. Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter Foundation

Most of the reviews I have seen are negative. It seems like it is a good product, but lots of people are saying that it broke their skin out or is patchy after wearing for a while. If I’m spending lots of money on my foundation, I would expect it to not break me out and stay in tact on my face after long wear.

A dupe that seems to do a better job according to TikTok is the Elf Halo Glow Liquid Filter, and for the price point, it’s worth a shot to me.

10. Dior Backstage Concealer

Last but definitely not least, this concealer is terrible. I’m a Dior girl through and through, but Dior Backstage has very cheap quality makeup. It’s patchy and does nothing to cover up the under eyes.
My absolute favorite concealer that is the best coverage I’ve ever seen (and is still within the Dior family) is the Dior Forever Skin Correct Full Coverage Concealer. A little pricer but thank me later.
