Puppy Love: Volunteering at the Humane Society

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montana chapter.
If you know anything about me, you may know that I’m a sucker for pretty much anything that walks on four legs, most especially man’s best friend and since I can’t keep my own dog here in Missoula while I’m at school, I get my fix by being at the Humane Society and helping out whenever and wherever I can at different events held by them during the year. Of course, the Humane Society serves as a shelter for many cats as well as a handful of other homeless fuzzy critters such as ferrets, rats, and bunnies and birds at different times. I can’t tell you how much better you feel when you leave the shelter and are driving back on highway 93 with the sun setting after spending your evening walking dogs and helping put together collars with name tags. It may sound silly, but if you need that extra something in your week that will make you smile and will be a huge help to an organization, the training and time commitment is worth it.

There are always great events that you can volunteer at, such as the upcoming Ken Shugart Auction on April 16th at the Doubletree Inn which highlights the recipient of the 2011 Ken Shugart Humanitarian Award as well as a silent auction.

If you want to make a difference in the life of an animal looking for some much needed love or simply be a helping hand at the shelter, then I encourage you to take a look at the website and get in contact with the shelter! For other volunteering ideas check out these tips.
