A Letter to Yourself When You’re Missing Someone You Shouldn’t

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MNSU chapter.

“One of the hardest things you will ever have to do is grieve the loss of a person who is still alive.” – unknown

So you come across an old picture or something that suddenly reminds you of your ex, old bestie, or someone who isn’t in your life anymore. What do you do? Do you text them and tell them you miss them? Do you ignore it and go on with your day? These thoughts can often times flood your mind. More than likely that person you’re missing is out of your life for a good reason. They may not have treated you right, not been there for you, or hurt you in some way.

Missing people you were once close with is completely normal, but you might not miss that person, you might just be missing the memories with them (trust me, I’ve learned this the hard way). It is completely ok to reminisce on old times and memories, but just acknowledge it, and then move on. Remind yourself that these days come and go. You don’t need to shoot them a text or call saying you miss them. All that is asking for is to invite them back to hurt you again. Everything happens for a reason, and they are out of your life for that same reason.

It’s a horrible feeling missing someone, and gets worse when you can’t do anything about it. You two were once best friends and now you are strangers. It’s a cold, undesirable feeling that no one enjoys. Just keep in mind that it happens to everyone. People change, and life goes on. You can’t dwell on relationships/friendships that don’t fulfill you. You can miss them from a distance, but other than that you can only hope that someone new crosses your path in the future that will help lessen the pain of loss

The point is…. appreciate the past, but make sure to never dwell on it. You might miss out on something good!

I'm Jennifer Bingen, I'm currently a Junior at Minnesota State University, Mankato, majoring in Business Management. My hometown is Maple Grove, MN. I joined Her Campus, because I wanted to get to know a great group of girls who are all for women empowerment. I strongly believe that women are capable of anything, and want to back that up with Her Campus. I want to incorporate Business into women empowerment, and show women that being in Business isn't just for men- there are plenty of CEO's who are women these days, which is awesome!  I am an english/writing tutor and I love it with a passion. I absolutely love running, yoga, my mom, dogs, coffee and holidays.
