WTF Happened at the Oscars Last Night and the Fake Reason Why

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MMM chapter.

Let’s be real; unless you’re name is Patrick Star and you live under a rock, you know what happened last night at the Oscars. But regardless, here’s a quick recap:

  • Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway took the stage to award “Best Picture”
  • Beatty hesitated, Dunaway took the envelope and announced La La Land
  • EVERYONE from La La Land took the stage and proceeded to accept the award
  • Producer Jordan Horowitz stopped short and announced suddenly that Moonlight had won

Now, on to the juicy stuff.

Beatty claims to have been given the wrong card by a PwC accountant (like really though, do you have to name drop like that). Both presenters go on to explain how it was the card for Best Actress which of course was Emma Stone for her performance in La La Land. But this Steve Harvey 2.0 mix up gets fishy because Emma Stone spoke to the press later in the night stating she was holding the card on stage with her…

Currently there are zero news sources questioning the validity of all this. Strange. But whatever, moving on. As a presenter of literally anything, Academy Award or not, if the card you were holding said “Best Actress” instead of “Best Picture” wouldn’t you say something? AGAIN STEVE HARVEY ALREADY MADE THIS MISTAKE FOR US. In my eyes we’re left with two conniving Gossip Girl-esque options: (1) this scheme was created by a La La Land lover who wouldn’t be able to live with them having 22 total awards this season instead of 23 or (2) it was done so by a La La Land hater who wanted to see them take the stage only soon to be booted off.

Both are crazy, I know. But who doesn’t love some juicy gossip?
