Tips To Keep Your Hair Healthy This Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MMM chapter.

This year we welcomed the first day of fall with almost 80° weather in New York City. Here are some tips to keep our hair looking and feeling healthy as the weather gets chilly (if it ever does).

Let that pony down!

If you are anything like me wearing your hair up is a staple in the heat because it keeps it off your neck and hopefully makes you sweat less. But, keeping it up all the time can create a lot of breakage and issues in hair growth. So my first tip is to let your hair down and let it flow for the cooler months and create a look of ease and style.

Give your hair LOTS of extra moisture!

As the cold weather approaches, our hair craves more moisture to compensate for the lack of moisture in the air. Add extra conditioner to your daily routine and let it sit while in the shower for up to 10-15 minutes before washing it out. Add a leave in conditioner after you shower on an especially cold day for extra moisture.

Try new styling products!

Because of the cold weather, styling products that use heat can create more damage in the colder months because of the stress of breakage. Try new products to help your hair stay curly, wavy, or straight, or however you choose to wear it. There are lots of great products out there that we have yet to try. Grab some and give it a go!

Do not wash your hair every day!

By washing your hair daily, you can wash away the hair’s natural oils that help keep the hair hydrated and healthy. If you have oily hair, you should be washing every other day, but dry hair every three to four days to help stimulate natural oils in your scalp.

If you wish to wear a hat, do it! But not a tight one!

Hats can help protect our hair from the wind and other elements, but be careful because can have a negative effect if not done properly. Tight hats can cause damage to hair that is just as bad as heating tools. Wear a loose hat that can protect from the elements!

By following these tips, you hair will feel and look healthier even during the chilliest fall days!
