Weird Nail Trends That Need to Disappear in 2018

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

Every girl loves to get her nails done, but can designs go too far? I’m all for the creativity, but some designs are cringe-worthy, and others aren’t practical for the everyday college girl. So, what designs left us scratching (not that you could with any of these designs) our heads in 2017?

Fuzzy Nails

This design first showed up at the Libertine Fashion Week. Jan Arnold, co-founder of CND Nail Polish, decided it was a good idea to put faux fur on her model’s nails. To me, it looks like these models just have hairy fingernails. Looks like someone forgot to wax their nails! I feel like the fur would be constantly irritating your fingers! Although they may keep your nails warm in the winter, hopefully this trend will shed in time for spring.

Iridescent Nails

I’m all for iridescent things, but wearing it on your nails? Sounds like a disaster to me. The weird part about this trend is that you can see the normal nail through the iridescent ones. On top of that, it looks like the nails are very fragile, which is a very frightening thought. As far as I’m concerned, iridescence should be left to fish fins rather than fingernails.

Spiral Nails

People are getting WAY too creative with these designs. Spiral nails are a big no-no. I’m not sure how people can even use their fingers with this type of shape? What happens if you have a scratch or try to send someone a text? It also reminds me of people who never cut their nails, and they make that long spiral shape! Guinness Book of World Records? I think not!

Aquarium Nails

Some things should just stay under water, and these nails should be doing that. The unsettling thing about this design is the fact that there is water in the nail. Not sure how they made this possible, but it sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. What happens if you bump your nail on something? Will all that hard work just spill out all over?! Cool concept, but is it realistic? Guess I can’t clip my nails alongside my iPhone!

Pimple Popping Nails

Probably the most DISGUSTING nail trend EVER. This design has been trending all over twitter. How do nail icons make this happen? A thicker substance such as hand cream is applied to the nail, and dried for quite some time. After that, you create the pimple design by using specific polish colors to make it look like a real pimple on your nail. Once you get bored, you can pomp that sucker and out comes the hand cream. For those pimple popping fanatics, I have the nails for you!

Duck Nails

I’ve seen several people sport the Duck Nail design. Why is it still around? I have no idea! I’m not quite sure how people go about their everyday lives with this kind of shape. The shape represents a ducks webbed feet, hence the title. It makes your hands look WAY bigger than they actually are, and who wants man hands? Ducks belong in the ponds, not on your fingers!!!

Pierced Nails

Kim Kardashian showed off her pierced nails to us via snapchat, and everyone went crazy over it. Of all the weird nail art trends, this is my favorite. These nails mean business. They do double duty. Not only do they look badass, but any girl could potentially defend herself when slinging a chain between her nails!

Ladies, I highly suggest you stay clear from a majority of these trends. If you want to look you best for the holidays, go with something simple and classic! If you’re willing to be bold, maybe one of these trends if for you. Personally, I’m anxiously awaiting the trends still to come in 2018.
