Sydney Stephens is this week’s campus celeb! From Dallas, Texas, Sydney is a sophomore majoring in Strategic Communication. She currently holds the title of Vice President in Battlewhale, MU’s sketch club. Read on to hear about Sydney and her role as a funny girl on campus.

Her Campus Mizzou: What made you want this position?

Sydney Stephens: I have wanted to be on the executive board of sketch ever since I joined. During my freshman year, sketch comedy was the organization where I felt I fit in most, and that feeling has stuck with me into my second year. Discussing comedy with friends has always been my favorite thing to do, and I found that in Battlewhale. After that I just wanted to do everything I could to be involved with sketch comedy, and I ran for and was elected Vice President in the Spring of 2015.

HCM: Do you have a favorite sketch? And, who inspires you?

SS: As far as my favorite sketch that I wrote, it would be one that I wrote with my friend Richard called “20s tinder.” As far as my favorite sketch that was professionally done, it would be “clown panties” by Amy Schumer. Amy Schumer, Nick Kroll, and Key and Peele inspire me with their sketch shows. They are all very different, but extremely good at what they do.

HCM: What was most appealing about Battlewhale that made you join over other organizations?

SS: Battlewhale is so appealing to me, because we really bond and collaborate with each other as the semester goes on. It’s a big time commitment, but I love being able to completely throw myself into it. The friendships I’ve made, and the laughs I’ve had have been worth every bit of work that I’ve put into the organization.

HCM: What was the most useful advice you have gotten when writing?

SS: The most useful advice that I’ve ever gotten about writing is to relate to the characters you write. In comedy, you’re often writing about absurd situations, but putting your own life experiences into it often makes things that much funnier for the audience.

HCM: What other organizations are you involved in?

SS: I am also involved in MU Improv, another amazing comedy organization. Both organizations bring so much joy into my life.
