Quick Fixes For Healthier Skin!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

As the spring season reaches full bloom, those glorious, warm rays of sun are finally reaching our pale skin. Many of us dream of laying out and waking up the beautiful bronzed color you’ve loved from summers past. However, with all the medical research about skin cancer causes, laying out may not be the best idea.

As college kids, skin care is not always a priority. However, the skin is your body’s biggest organ! To keep it healthy for your entire life, you have to start taking care of it now!

“The biggest challenge for college girls is actually washing their faces at the end of the day,” shared Mizzou’s own skin expert Linette of the Clinique counter. “Girls either get too busy or forget, and it is really vital to wash off all the dirt and make-up that collects on your skin throughout the day. Just cleansing your face with wet wipes right before bed can improve your complexion.”

There are also very basic face washes that will refresh your skin and clear away dead cells. Neutrogena puts out a great liquid cleanser as well as wipes that won’t dry out skin.  It’s important to understand your skin type so that you use the correct skin care products.

If you have dry skin, make sure you are using products that moisturize as well as clean. For general skin health, Linette suggests Clinique’s Clarifying lotion:

“It gets rid of the dirt, excess oil,  and dead skin cells on your face, while promoting the growth of new healthy skins cells.”

As far as tanning goes, Linette commented,

“There are so many alternatives to tanning beds, sunless tanning lotions and spray tans is so much better for your skin.” She recommends that you look for a tinted daily moisturizers or a bronzer that illuminates your skin. Also don’t forget to wear sunscreen daily with SPF of at least 30 or higher to really protect your skin from UVA and UVB damage.

“UVA damage occurs later in life,” explains Linette. “You may notice uneven skin tone and brown spots caused from sun damage.”

UVB rays cause the sunburn and irritation you notice right away. Tanning poolside is still okay, as long as are wearing the proper protection, and reapply every few hours. If you still end up getting burned, Aloe Vera can help soothe the burn. After a few days though, switch to regular lotion rather than Aloe Vera, which can clog your pores.

Now it’s your turn to weigh in, collegiettes!  Please share your favorite beauty products and skin health tips with us in the comment box below!
