National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

Think Pink: It’s October, which means it’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Her Campus is here to offer you some breast cancer prevention tips during this month of raising awareness.

6 Ways to Prevent Breast Cancer

1. Eat right.
Obesity significantly increases your risk for breast cancer (and a myriad of other diseases). Watch what you eat each day, and then you’ll never have to worry about digging yourself out of a significant weight problem in the future. For example, make an effort to swap a sugary snack each day for a Yoplait light! You’ll save some calories, get some protein and calcium, and help support the Susan G. Komen Foundation if you send in your lids!

2. Drink less.
Drinking alcohol increases the risk of breast cancer. Aim for one alcoholic drink or less a day.

3. Move more.
This goes hand in hand in avoiding obesity. Regular exercise also helps with stress relief and provides endorphins, as well as a number of other physical and psychological benefits. Start today! Explore the Tiger X classes the Rec and bring along some friends.

4. Discontinue hormone therapies.
Unfortunately, this includes birth control. Ask your doctor about other options if you’re worried about the risks. This also includes growth hormone therapy, and hormone therapy used to treat menopausal symptoms.

5. Be familiar with your body.
Be aware of any changes occurring with your body. Check out Susan G. Komen’s information about how to conduct self-examinations.

6. Know your family history.
Some strains of breast cancer are genetic. Know your family history of the disease, and make sure your doctor is familiar with it too.
