Mumford and Sons’ new album Babel is one that will pleasure the listening ears of any true “Mums and Sons” fan, and reel in anyone who has not already had “Little Lion Man” replaying in his or her head for the past two years. The album is a step up from the success of their 2010 debut album Sigh No More with more up-beat, passionate songs.
The lyrics and melodies of ballad-like songs “I Will Wait” and “Lover of the Light” prove the diversity of the band. While straightforward love songs are not typically on the set list of Mumford and Sons, they brand love ballads with their unique folk sound.
A track called “Learn me Right” from Pixar’s hit princess movie Brave features lyrics from the final song on Babel entitled “Not with Haste.” Marcus Mumford’s voice gives new life and appreciation to the lyrics as they accompany the rich acoustic strumming of his guitar in a new kind of love song.
The subtle references to Christianity in Sigh No More appear once again in Babel. These religious undertones add depth and dimensions to songs, allowing listeners to deduct new meaning from a track each time it plays. The Christian motif is presented in a way that does not overpower the songs and gives listeners the choice as to whether or not they want to analyze the songs under a religious lens.
Babel is proof that a Mumford and Sons album is well worth the wait. Each song holds true to lead vocalist Marcus Mumford’s strong delivery as both a singer and songwriter. This album is certainly on its way to being one of the best things to happen in 2012.
