HCM’s Top 10 Valentine’s Day Movies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

Love is in the air, collegiettes! That means Valentine’s Day is only a few weeks away, and what better way to get in the romantic mood than to watch some of the most famous couples on film? They’ll make you laugh, they’ll make you cry, and they may even fill the void of romance in your own life between all those classes and extracurriculars. But even if you aren’t single this year, these movies will no doubt get you excited for the upcoming holiday of romance!

10.  Just Married

This hilarious rom-com centers around a young couple and their disastrous honeymoon. From broken down rental cars to grungy hotels, Ashton Kutcher and Britney Murphy star as the newlyweds who realize they may be in over their heads when it comes to marriage. Hilarity most definitely ensues.

9.  The Last Song

Miley Cyrus stars as a troubled adolescent shipped off to her estranged father’s beach house for the summer. There, she falls for a local named Will (Liam Hemsworth) who heals her damaged heart. The movie comes packed with tear-jerking moments, but luckily a shirtless Liam Hemsworth will ease the pain.

8.  A Walk To Remember

Landon falls hard for fellow student Jamie, only to learn of her terminal infliction with leukemia. Within her final days, Landon makes sure Jamie gets to fulfill all of the amazing items on her bucket list, ensuring that she lives the rest of her life to the fullest. Romance just doesn’t get better than this, collegiettes. Make sure tissues are within reach!

7.  The Wedding Singer

On a lighter note, this Adam Sandler rom-com finds a broken hearted wedding singer falling for a girl (Drew Barrymore) who’s already engaged. Full of eclectic 80s hairdos and music, this movie will leave you laughing (an old lady raps, everyone!) to crying over that final scene on the airplane (pictured above). The Wedding Singer wins the award for most romantic original song.

6.  Romeo + Juliet

This well-known, classic tale of forbidden love comes with a modern twist in this 1996 version. Star crossed lovers, played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, are pulled apart by dueling families in Verona Beach, California. With the original old English script still intact, this film will make you swoon over Leonardo’s rich dialogue and make you wish your own boyfriend would shout out how much he loves you from below your balcony. *sigh*

5.  Crazy Stupid Love

One of two Ryan Gosling movies on this list, Crazy Stupid Love follows newly divorced Cal, played by Steve Carrell, and his quest to relearn the ropes of a new dating world. He gets help from the mysterious Jacob (Gosling), who discovers he has romantic issues of his own. The ending fight scene of this movie has me laughing out loud every time. Anticipate a surprising twist!

4.  When Harry Met Sally

This classic rom-com begs the age old question: Can a man and a woman really be friends? Harry and Sally have known each other for years and are very good friends, but have trouble finding the line between friendship and relationship. The movie follows their lives over a span of years and is full of witty dialogue and heartwarming scenes (Fake orgasm in a restaurant, anyone?). This classic is most definitely a must-see!

3.  Pretty Woman

Julia Roberts stars as a beautiful prostitute hired by a businessman to accompany him to different business social events, and finds herself being transformed inside and out by his charming ways. The chemistry between the two is undeniable and the heartfelt storyline will get you to love every minute of this romantic comedy. If you don’t see this movie it will be a “big mistake. Huge.”

2.  Dirty Dancing

While on vacation with her family, Frances “Baby” Houseman finds her typically privileged, mundane life being pushed to its limits when she ends up falling for the resort’s steamy dance teacher. No one can resist Patrick Swayze and his amazing dance moves in this lovable classic.

1.  The Notebook

Of course The Notebook is the number one Valentine’s Day movie on this list, but that’s only because it’s the best of the best! Based on a Nicholas Sparks novel, the film follows the courtship of Ally and Noah who are from two separate worlds yet find themselves falling passionately in love one summer, only to be torn apart by their social differences. Told in flashbacks by an aged narrator, the film pulls at your heartstrings in the best way and has you yearning for your own passionate kiss in the rain. It’s the perfect movie to watch with that special someone.

There you have it, collegiettes!  Luckily you have plenty of time to watch them all before V-Day.  Don’t see one of your favorites on the list?  Tell us about it in the comments below!
