HCM’s Holiday Gift Guide

The winter holidays are almost here! With Thanksgiving over and Black Friday madness finally coming to a halt, gifts are on everyone’s mind. Expensive gifts are out of the question for us collegiettes™. Here are some cute and affordable ideas for everyone special in your life this holiday season.

For your girlfriends

  • A cute scarf, mittens, gloves, “glittens” or headband to keep your bestie warm on her walks to class. Forever
    21 has a wide selection under $10!
  • A decorated picture frame or picture board will be creative, meaningful and affordable. Check out Hobby Lobby or Michaels for cute decorations.
  • Cake pops or a gift card from Starbucks because even the smallest treat can brighten your friend’s day.
  • Cute fuzzy slippers from Victoria’s Secret starting at $25 will keep your friend’s feet warm this winter. They come in different colors and patterns. Fuzzy socks work just as well.
  • Lotion, lip gloss or body spray are good for every girly girl. Bath and Body Works has the best deals. Be sure to look at the buy one, get one free Holiday Traditions line or the Be Enchanted signature collection, which is buy three, get two free!
  • A CD of your favorite playlist or holiday songs – thoughtful and free!

For your boyfriend

  • Diddy Beats headphones from Best Buy. Your man will love rocking out to his favorite jams at the gym with
    his awesome new headphones. Check eBay for great savings.
  • A couple’s massage. This might be on the pricier side, but who can pass up a day of relaxation together? Look at Groupon for deals. The more in advance you book the massage, the cheaper it will be.
  • A wallet. Most boys use and abuse their wallets, which wear out easily. Head to Kohls or Target to find affordable wallets that also look stylish.
  • A frame with a photo of the two of you. Or If you’re artistic, you could draw or paint a picture of you together. That’s something he’ll never forget.
  • His favorite team’s jersey or hat. It’s easy to find deals now with such big savings in stores.
  • The newest release of a video game. Just make sure it’s a game you can put up a fight against him in!

For Mom

  • A new bottle of her most-used OPI or Essie nail polish or a gift card for a manicure. You could get one for
    yourself as well and go together for a mother-daughter bonding session.
  • A Lily Pulitzer coffee mug. They come in a variety of bright patterns and start at $10.
  • A subscription to her favorite magazine. Every time it comes in the mail, she’ll remember who got it for her.
  • A recipe book. If your mom likes to cook, create and decorate a book of all her recipes. Then they’ll be in one place and make it easy on her. You can get really creative and organize them by holiday, ethnicity or her favorites.

  • A watch. Even if he has one, every day can use another. Check out the sales at Target and Nordstrom.
  • A polo in a unique color, so he’ll think of you whenever he wears it. Most dads get stuck in neutral colors. Here’s your chance to spice up Dad’s wardrobe!
  • A fuzzy robe. Check Costco for affordable versions that he can relax in on the weekends.
  • A tie because fathers can never have too many. Choose a fun and fashionable pattern that fits his personality.
  • A novel. Pick up the next book on his “To Read” list, and you’ll have a gift you know he will read in his spare time.

  • A fleece tie blanket with their favorite patterns or colors. It’s pretty easy to make and shouldn’t take more
    than an hour.
  • A season of their favorite TV show on DVD. They won’t be able to put it down.
  • A huge candy jar, decorated by you, of their favorite treats that they can munch on all winter.
  • A makeover for your younger sister. It’s free and something fun to do together now that you’re home from college for a bit.
  • A makeup bag from Vera Bradley’s latest collection. We girls use them so often that they get dirty. Give her a cute new one as a replacement.
Allison Goldberg is a junior at the University of Missouri double majoring in strategic communication journalism with an emphasis in PR and marketing and psychology. In Columbia, she is a member of Zeta Tau Alpha women's fraternity executive council and is a Rent the Runway campus rep. During her spare time you can find her shopping, spending time with her friends and family, running outside or reading a fashion magazine. Allison has interned at a social media firm, BCV Evolve in Chicago for the past two summers. She hopes to work for a fashion PR firm in Chicago or New York when she graduates and eventually travel to South America.
Vanessa Meuir is senior majoring in magazine journalism and English. She was born in St. Louis, MO and raised in Columbia, MO where she now attends school. In addition to her involvement with Her Campus Mizzou, she works in Mizzou's athletics department and serves as a writing tutor for students on campus. She has gained most of her journalistic experience while writing and blogging for the Columbia Missourian, a local newspaper, and Vox magazine, a student-run campus magazine. She also gained some publishing experience while interning at The Missouri Review, a literary magazine. When Vanessa is not working or in class, she enjoys maintaining a personal blog that comments on reality television, spending time with her five roommates, reading and dabbling in amateur photography. Among her favorite things are diet coke, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Disney Channel and fuzzy socks.
