Festival Fashion Must-Haves

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

My fellow music fanatics, our favorite time of year has come once again to grace us with all of its glory. Whether you’re going to Ultra, Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, or the plethora of other festivals across the country (or world for that matter) this year, with the music itself also comes what you will wear to see your favorite acts. Comfort is essential for full days of dancing in the sun (or rain), but style should never be sacrificed. Here is your list of essential clothes and accessories for the 2013 festival season:

Flower Crown: Channel your inner hippie or Lana Del Rey flower crown. They are available on sites such as NastyGal, Urban Outfitters and Etsy. If you are feeling crafty, a flower crown is also simple to make yourself. With a glue gun, strand of ribbon and about 12 artificial flowers, you can make your own headband of flowers for about $2.

Hair Chalk: Gaining popularity last year when celebrities such as Katy Perry and Selena Gomez added candy-colored hues to their locks, hair chalk allows wearers to do the same, but with no commitment.

Awesome Denim Cutoffs: Whether you make your own cutoffs from Goodwill, or buy a pair from a store, let your creativity run wild for a perfect pair of funky festival shorts. Distress them, bleach them, stud them, or dye them. Anything goes.

Crochet Halter Top or Funky Bralette: Rather than simply wearing a bikini top, a crochet halter or colorful bralette offers about as much airiness to not get too hot in a crowd of thousands, while being much more stylish. It will also look awesome with your denim cutoffs.

NO SANDALS: Really, wear ANYTHING besides sandals to a music festival this summer. Those flip-flops may look cute with the rest of your outfit, but when your toes get stomped on as soon as you get in the crowd, you will be sure to regret it. Combat boots, Converse, suede fringe boots, or really any other comfortable pair of shoe with a closed toe works. Be sure to check the weather forecast as well, rainboots are your best bet for an unwanted thunderstorm.

Fanny pack/small satchel: At any crowded event, you want your personal belongings close to you “just-in-case.” The closer you camera, cellphone and money is to your body, the better. Stay away from backpacks to carry your things, the people standing behind you in the crowd will appreciate it.
