7 Things We All Saw at Parties This Halloweekend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Minnesota chapter.

Halloween parties are a Halloweekend staple in college. Trick or treat takes on a whole new meaning in college: costumes get crazier, the parties are wild, and it’s an entirely different experience, making it far spookier than that of Halloween celebrations in the past. I’ve compiled a list of all the stereotypical things you probably saw at Halloween parties last weekend, ranging from the different costumes to the unique beverages.

Halloween Themed Drinks

No party is complete without wild concoctions, and Halloween’s the perfect excuse to test out your bartending skills. At high end parties, you likely saw smoking or candy corn flavored drinks, but at other lower budget parties you probably saw multicolored or other questionable drinks. Along with strange drinks come strange ingredients so always beware; these drinks are usually more for show rather than consumption. Also, make sure you’re careful while you’re drinking at parties! Drinking a beverage provided at a party can create unsafe circumstances especially if you didn’t make the drink yourself. In order to have a fun and safe night, always create your own spooky drink and bring it with you!

People “too cool” to dress up

This happens every Halloween no matter where you are. There will always  be people who think they’re “too cool” to dress up. Unfortunately for them, they’re definitely missing out because Halloween’s significantly more fun when you go all out and dress up.

That one person who got creative with their sexy costume

Sexy anything is a common theme among all college Halloween costumes. Cats, police officers and firefighters are classic, but you probably saw people who put a sexy spin to their costumes! Sexy Barb from Stranger Things? Sexy garbage man? Sexy nursing home resident? Sexy Beanie Babies? I bet you saw it all! People can take anything and turn it into a sexy costume; it’s kind of a secret skill all college students have.

That one person who used Halloween as an excuse to be shirtless

Similar to how some students can take anything and turn it sexy, others can take any costume idea and make it an excuse to be shirtless. I guess the temperature doesn’t bother them because I know that I’d freeze if I had no shirt on all night.

Group costumes

Another theme for costumes is dressing up with a group. These are usually creative and funny to see because they’re really creative and well thought out. They’re fun to participate in with your friends and a lot of them are typically based off of popular groups, TV shows or movies. Not to mention, they make for some great Instas.

Weird decorations

Every Halloween party needs festive decorations, but being a college student means you don’t have the budget for phenomenal decor. The most common decorations are usually homemade and range from toilet paper to pumpkins, carved and smashed. Thankfully, in college people don’t go to the parties for the decorations.

Funny costumes

These are my personal favorites because normally people can come up with some hilariously clever costumes. Usually they’re homemade and really creative! They can range from wearing something utterly ridiculous to just being punny. These costumes are the best because they require the most thought and usually showcase the person’s true personality.

Even though Halloween is great time to let loose, get crazy, and have fun with your friends, don’t forget the importance of safety! For tips on partying smart, check out our article here!
