For the past few weeks, I have been feeling a little bit sad. Don’t get me wrong, this semester has been so much fun and I have met so many awesome people, but I can’t help but miss my best friend from back home. It has been almost 2 months since I have actually seen her in person, and even though we have video called each other plenty of times it just isn’t the same. I’m not the only one feeling this way. College is about new beginnings and fresh starts, but that doesn’t mean you won’t ever miss the people you were with all throughout high school! If you are in the same boat as me, here’s a few tips that have helped me cope with feeling just a little bit homesick!

Call Your Friends/Family

Like I said before, calling friends and family won’t be the same as seeing their lovely faces in person. However, getting to hear their voice and catch up can still help calm these feelings. Try scheduling out a day and time when you are both free to chat for a little bit!

Watch old videos/memories

I do this often when I am feeling homesick, and it helps to see all of the good times my friend and I had before we both went to college. It also helps me remember that there will still be plenty of fun times in our future, and that she will always be there for me.

Do things you and your friend/family member used to do

My best friend and I over the summer read this entire 7-page book series and went into avid discussions on our favorite characters. Obviously not everyone is going to be as nerdy as the two of us, but sometimes when I am missing my best friend I will pick up our favorite book and read a few passages to reminisce. You can also watch a tv show you watched together or really any activity!

With my busy schedule, I have found it difficult to be able to ride all the way down to New Jersey to see her. However, this week I am going up for a day to see her for her birthday! Without these tips, I would have been so lost. I hope these help someone feel a little less homesick!

Hey! I'm Bri and I am a sophomore at Millersville University majoring in Middle Level English Education. I love insanely cheesy literature, iced coffee (lots of it!), hanging with my dogs, fall-scented candles, indie/alt music, and binge watching television. I am so excited to continue writing for the HC Millersville team!
