Cute Hair from Unexpected Household Item

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Millersville chapter.

So, I’ve recently became obsessed with a new hair style idea I got from Pinterest. It’s called a sock bun.

I bet you’re wondering how the heck you can create a bun out of a sock. The look is very simple to create. It can be pulled off when you want to look great without the hassle of taming your hair. It’s a good look to lounge around in or add a polished feeling to your outfit. It’s also great if you like wearing buns but you don’t have enough hair to pull one off! I swear I wear the bun at least once a week because I have a fine hair, and I crave volume!

So you want to learn how to create your own sock bun? Here is all the info you will ever need:

To create the “Donut” (what’s made from the sock):
*You can also buy the donut at Claire’s. It’s made out of a spongy material. The sizes range from big to small and the prices range from $4 to $6.

Materials:
• A tube sock that is close to the same shade as your hair
• Fabric scissors
Instructions:
1. Lie the sock flat on the table
2. With the scissors, cut the tube part of the sock away from foot of the sock
3. Take the tube of the sock and roll the material over onto itself. Meaning, take the tip of the tube and flip it inside out.
4. Repeat step 3, rolling the fabric as you go
5. The finished product should be a circle of fabric that is in the shape of a donut.
To create the bun:
• Hair ties, preferably in the same shade as your hair
• Bobby pins… you guessed it – in the same shade as your hair
Instructions:
1. Put hair into a pony tail with a hair tie
2. Pull pony tail through donut, letting the donut rest on top of the hair tie
3. Depending on the length of hair:
a) For short hair, splay the hair over the donut, covering all of the fabric. Take a hair elastic and wrap around the hair and the donut. For any remaining hair that doesn’t stay put, pin down with bobby pins.
b) For long hair, wrap hair either clock-wise or counter-clockwise around the donut until the fabric is covered. Wrap bun in a hair elastic or pin down with bobby pins.
4. If you choose, add in a headband, decorative bobby pins, or fake flowers in the bun. Don’t be afraid to be creative!
