The College Experience, Pt. 1

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Millersville chapter.

The college experience. It’s something everyone talks about. This blog takes the college experience and transforms it into something personal. Follow two characters, Olivia and Allison through their crazy transition from high school goody-two-shoes into… something else. Read each girl’s journal to view different sides of the same story. Maybe you can sympathize, maybe you can empathize, but above all, savor the experience.

So here’s the deal. This is not a diary; it’s a journal. I hope if you’re reading this you are me, except like 30 years older. Also, if you are some kind of historian reading this and want to publish it, (because we all know I am going to be a famous historical figure some day) I would think twice. Journals are sacred. They don’t get read by anyone other than the writer, it’s just fact, so don’t argue.

You may be wondering why I decided to write in a journal. It’s not like my life is crazy interesting or anything, but I’m going off to college in a few days, and who knows what could happen there. There are thousands of possibilities and I don’t want to miss out. Everyone says that the college years are the golden years. I want to be able to remember the best years of my life someday when I’m a crotchety old lady.

I digress.

I got to hang out with my future roommate yesterday. Her name is Allison. I drove to her place; she lives a little more than an hour away in a cute little neighborhood. Before yesterday we had only met twice, and both times were brief. I knew a little about her, thanks to some pretty heavy Facebook creeping. By the time I pulled up to her house I was close to shaking because I was so nervous. I mentally kicked myself for agreeing to stay over. I hate sleepovers, especially ones with strangers. Sheesh.

I didn’t know if we would get along. I mean I don’t do normal things, I don’t have normal friends, I don’t listen to normal music, and I’m not the stereotypical girl—at all. I mean what kind of girl knits for fun, thinks Bon Jovi is the greatest artist alive and is an MMA fighter on the side? Oh, that’s me.

Long story short, there was no reason for me to be nervous. We sat on her couch and talked forever. I don’t remember who brought it up, but we started talking about what kind of fun we wanted to have at college.

I personally don’t want to go out and get wasted every night, and I really hoped that she felt the same way. She told me she was totally straight edge, and didn’t think there was a need to go out and get plastered. We both agreed that there are other ways to have a good time.

I’m excited for college!

GAH! Okay. I am officially freaking out. In t-minus three days, I will have my entire life packed into my mom’s Toyota on the way to Millersville. All of my memories, my books, my old journals, my pictures – everything. It still hasn’t hit me quite yet – we’ll see what happens in a few days.

Anyway.

My future roommate Olivia came over the other day and spent the night. I was kind of worried what would come out of it, but everything worked out well – at least, I thought so. I tend to “walk to the beat of my own drum” as I like to call it, and don’t often hit it off with everyone right away, so I was surprised how well Olivia and I got along. We mostly just sat on my couch and talked, but I had a really good time – I think we were up until four in the morning or something talking about pineapple juice (long story). I can already tell we’ll be trouble – getting ourselves into some goofy adventure or another.

The thing I think I was most relieved to hear about is her partying style. Personally, I don’t see the thrill of drinking some vile liquid until you act so stupid that you puke. Or snorting or smoking something that makes you hallucinate. If she was into that stuff, I wouldn’t mind, but the fact that she doesn’t makes it a bit easier. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure I’ll find myself at a party or two with a beer in my hand, but college has to be about more than just partying – we can have fun doing our own thing, can’t we?

So far I’m super pumped to room with Olivia in a few days, but I was on my MAX account this morning and ran into a problem – I noticed we are assigned to a triple. With another roommate. So it’s the three of us now. And I was doing some…light…Facebook stalking, and this girl looks kind of weird. She has a strange style, and goes to anime conventions. No lie. I know I’m a bit quirky, but this girl just seems odd. Ugh I’m such a bitch – I shouldn’t judge her. I don’t even KNOW her. Maybe we can be the three musketeers, right? Or maybe this could end in a giant disaster.
