While it may seem like it’s obvious that Thanksgiving is about spending time with family, there are more things that we can focus on doing than simply being with family members. It’s also important to remember that not everyone around us enjoys being with their family, or some people may not have family members to spend time with. Here are some more things you can be focusing on while you’re home for the holidays!

1. Volunteer to help those in need.

Not everyone has a home to go to for Thanksgiving, or even a place to cook a nice meal. There are many food pantries and soup kitchens that always need help, so find one near you and make it a point to stop by and help out for a few hours. You’ll never know how much of a difference a small action can make. Find a list of your local food pantries and soup kitchens here.

2. Donate non-perishables to your local food bank.

Don’t have the time to volunteer? Don’t worry, you can still help! Go through your pantry and search through your canned foods and non-perishables. We all have cans of food that have been untouched for months and you don’t think you’ll ever eat, but they don’t have to go to waste. Donate your food to help someone in need. 3. Give away your old winter clothes.

As the weather gets colder, it gets harder and harder for struggling families to keep warm. Keep in mind that many families can’t afford heating systems or even a place to stay, and winter coats and clothes are expensive. Search through your closet for coats, scarves, hats, blankets, or more that you no longer use and bring them to your local Goodwill or Salvation Army to help a family in need.

Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving, and stay warm this holiday season! Keep in mind that there are always people struggling in the world, and you’re always able to help. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there!
