HC: Briefly, what route did you take toward your current career?

Dr. R: Consulting straight out of undergrad.  Worked in market research and sales/sales training. Finished MBA nights and weekends. Then, on to doctoral program then to MU.

HC: What kind of advice would you give senior students looking for a career right out of Miami?

Dr. R: Career advice…  Easy!  Two big points.  a) Find a passion and pursue it.  b)”Go With Growth!  Find an industry that is growing, find the best company in the industry, provide a mission-critical function for the company, and do something that will stretch your abilities.  If you can do all of these things, you AUTOMATICALLY WIN!

HC: What advice might you give younger students who are trying to build a resume for a future career?

Dr. R: Build your resume…  You need 4 things: a) Decent grades… not Dean’s List but above a 3.0.  Don’t go nuts… just do your job. b) Experience… summer employment at least, and an internship or two related to your field would be ideal. c) Meaningful activity… by this, I mean some combination of student organizations, school year employment, organized athletics, or philanthropy… you need at least TWO good ones.  Don’t just participate – LEAD! d) You need to be able to express how this combination of a+b+c makes you unique and able to contribute.

HC: If you had to name up to five qualities a student needs to succeed, which would you choose?

Dr. R: FIVE qualities?  Nah…  I can sum it up in just a couple. a) “Get with the program!”  This means join whatever you do with enthusiasm and a willingness to do whatever it takes to help out, move forward, improve things, support, succeed, play for the TEAM! b) Ethics and honor are EVERYTHING!  Stand for something.
