Holiday Fashion: Be Yourself!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mercer chapter.

Thanksgiving has now come and gone. Everyone is now back at Mercer campus a little grumbly for having to leave after the small taste of the holidays. But, as we all get back into our busy class schedules again (trust me I have more projects due this coming week than I care to think of consciously) let’s reflect.

It’s basically an unspoken rule that we (meaning us ladies) have to dress nicely for the traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Sometimes this could be tricky. How much dress-up, is too much?

During my own Thanksgiving dinner at the O’Neal household, I decided to keep things simple and homey. I wore a pair of my favorite blue jeans from Delia’s, a cute flowery blouse from Kohl’s, and small black shoes from Target. This outfit helped me stay comfortable but still presentable. I felt pretty but definitely not over-dressed.

This combo was perfect for socializing with my family and close friends at Thanksgiving dinner for multiple reasons. For one, it was comfortable. I personally cannot wear something for very long that isn’t comfortable. Plus, that comfort factor helps me feel more cozy and gets me into the Thanksgiving spirit. That’s partially what Thanksgiving is all about, right? Comfort!

Another reason I chose this outfit was because it was somewhat neutral to my relatives. Some of my relatives at Thanksgiving I hadn’t seen in two years so it was important to me to make a good impression. I didn’t want to look like an angst-filled, punk teenager. But, I also definitely did not want to look like an old lady either. I think I pulled this off very well. My family seemed impressed and proud of me.

This outfit also most importantly, let me be myself. It is what I usually would wear and helped show off my personality. I felt clean, comfortable and ready for that Thanksgiving feast!

So basically the best things to keep in mind for the upcoming holidays are:

1) Feel comfortable. Wear clothes that you feel comfortable and happy in. If you aren’t comfortable, how can you enjoy spending time with family and friends?

2) Keep it simple. Remember, you’re meeting with family, relatives, and friends! They’ll be much more impressed with what clever things you learned during your semester in college than they will with your elaborate clothing.

3) Be yourself. Bottom line, be happy and confident with yourself. Let your choice in holiday fashion help to express your unique personality.
