The Hottest Same-Sex Costumes for Halloween ‘23

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McMaster chapter.

You cannot hop on TikTok during the month of October without your FYP being flooded with costume ideas — especially couple costumes! The key to the sexiest costumes with the wow factor is to explore a niche that is both recognizable, yet unique, or to take a basic costume and personalize it. For my same-sex couples, here are a few ideas that will no doubt make you and your SO the star of the show.

1. Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn on HBO Max.

Harley Quinn is most famously associated with her toxic partner-in-crime, the Joker. What most people don’t know is that Harley Quinn is a queer queen, seen dating Poison Ivy in many DC comic books, and more recently, seen in the HBO Max cartoon series, Harley Quinn.

Sport this sexy leather Harley Costume. It’s the most accurate to the cartoon series and so flattering. Paired with two cute pigtails and red and blue hair makeup, you’re set!
For Poison Ivy’s look, get yourself a green ensemble like this. Complete the costume with a super hot corset and matching headband. For my more masculine folks, take a trip to the thrift store to purchase a green romper and a green blazer. With enough glued-on makeup leaves, any green ensemble will do.

2. Marceline the Vampire Queen and Princess Bubble Gum, Adventure Time

This adorable cartoon couple makes one of my favorite WLW costumes. Opposites have never attracted each other so cutely before! These costumes are super easy to DIY and easily customizable to you and your SO’s style. Have you or your partner dressed in a hyper-pink outfit and wig, along with a golden tiara to seal the deal, and the other in a grungy, plaid outfit, and maybe throw in a red prop guitar to really sell it.

3. Rue and Jules, Euphoria

Rue and Jules, although not always the healthiest nor perfect, are one of the most widely known sapphic couples of the 21st century. As we all await season three (rumored to come out in 2024!), this throwback couple will make a perfect comeback this Halloween, specifically as Rue and Jules take on like Romeo and Juliet on their Halloween night. Follow in their lead by wearing an angelic white dress, a pair of white feathered wings, and, obviously, a ton of glitter eye makeup. For Rue’s get-up, a three-piece suit, and heavy black eye makeup.

4. Earring Ken and Allan, Barbie: the Movie

Barbie was the movie of the year and is no doubt going to be the costume of the year too! The movie featured a glimpse at the infamously banned ‘homoerotic’ Earring Magic Ken doll and the suggestible “He’s Ken’s buddy” Allan doll. These costumes are quick and super easy to spice up!

For Earring Magic Ken, pick up a purple vest, like this super cute one linke here from BooHoo, with a purple mesh shirt underneath (or without), and of course, don’t forget the hoop earring!
For Allan’s doll, throw on a striped beach polo, blue beach shorts, and slicked-back ginger hair.

5. The Roman Empire

How often do men think about the Roman Empire? Definitely a lot more after seeing you and your SO on Halloween. These costumes are unforgettably hot and on-trend this year. The only thing sexier than one Spartan warrior is two.

6. Cowboys, Brokeback Mountain inspired

Western getup is doing its rounds on TikTok this year and the gay community cannot help but be reminiscent of the shared popularity of the cowboys featured in Brokeback Mountain: iconic, timeless, and ever-so-flattering. All the cowboy chic items are easy to thrift or find on Amazon!

In any of these costumes, confidence is what sells it! Make them your own, have fun, and stay safe!
