Costumes Inspired by Iconic Female Characters

Updated Published
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McMaster chapter.

Consider this a friendly reminder to stop procrastinating your Halloween costume preparations! With the big night quickly approaching, if you want to avoid the typical “cat” or “witch” choices, brainstorming early can be the key to your spooky success. Coming up blank for ideas? Drawing inspiration from the world of cinema for your upcoming costume can make a big difference. I’ve put together a fantastic selection of character costumes inspired by iconic female characters from various films, including those that are spooky, funny, and nostalgic. Get ready to embrace your favorite on-screen heroines and bring their magic (or horror) to life with these unforgettable costume ideas!

1. Carrie White from Carrie

If you’re looking to create a memorable Halloween costume, why not do one of the most iconic characters in horror movie history—Carrie White! Start with a pink or white slip dress, similar to the classic prom dress Carrie wears in the film, and simply add a tiara. What sets this costume apart is the addition of fake blood. To truly embody Carrie’s unforgettable prom night, apply fake blood to the dress. Whether you choose a full-on blood-soaked look or a more subtle approach, adding this element will instantly make your costume recognizable to any horror movie fan.

2. Juliet Capulet from Romeo + Juliet

You know I had to add a touch of romance to this spooky season! To dress up as Juliet, wear a white dress and angel wings, and don’t forget her cross necklace. When it comes to hair styling, a half-up, half-down hairstyle is a perfect choice!

3. Gracie Hart from Miss Congeniality

If you’re looking for a fun Halloween costume, why not channel your inner Gracie Hart from the movie Miss Congeniality? Gracie, played by Sandra Bullock, is a tough and determined FBI agent who goes undercover as a contestant in a beauty pageant. To recreate Gracie’s look, start with a hot pink dress, tiara, and sash to capture the pageant theme. Complete the outfit with black combat boots and carry a toy gun or holster to emulate Gracie’s undercover FBI agent persona.

4. Trinity from The Matrix

Played by Carrie-Anne Moss, Trinity is a skilled hacker and a member of the rebel group led by Morpheus. To recreate her look, wear leather from head to toe. A Trinity costume wouldn’t be complete without the signature Matrix shades, so choose sunglasses with a futuristic design to capture her iconic style. To elevate your costume, use hair gel or styling products to slick back your hair. If you have longer hair, consider styling it in a sleek bun or ponytail!

5. Maxine from X

To achieve this look, you only need a few items: short overalls, a bandeau (optional), cowboy boots, a red bandana, and a fake axe. The critical elements of this look are the blue eyeshadow and bleached eyebrows. If you’re not comfortable with bleaching your eyebrows, you can use concealer to cover them instead. Finally, if you want to elevate your look, you can add fake blood. You can either splatter it on your clothes or strategically place it on your face – the choice is up to you!

6. Suki from Fast and Furious

I’m sure you remember that iconic outfit Suki wore in Fast and Furious. It was a truly unforgettable fashion moment. To recreate this look, it is rather simple. Start with a pair of pink pants and layer a cropped purple tank top over a pink one. The look is complete!

7. Alexa and Alexie Grady from The Shining

Are you and your bestie still searching for a costume? Look no further! To become The Shining Twins, all you need are black Mary Janes, white knee-high socks, and a blue dress. This iconic costume is guaranteed to grab attention and give everyone a chilling reminder of the classic horror film.

So, don’t wait any longer! Start planning your movie-inspired Halloween costume now. Let’s make this year’s celebration truly memorable.
