You might have recently noticed a lot of astrology buzz on your newsfeed. Sun sign, moon sign, you’re a Cancer, she’s a Sagittarius, blah, blah, blah. What’s all that about? What does all this mean?

I got into astrology more because of the recent growing fascination with it on my social media. I wanted to know what everyone was talking about. This does not mean that I want to preach that astrology is 100% accurate and that everyone should believe in it. Whether you believe in it or not, it is still a fascinating topic the more you find out about it. So I’m here to give you a brief overview of what this all means, and why everyone is suddenly asking you about your birth date and time.

First- what is astrology? Astrology assumes that everything in this universe works together in harmony. How the Sun, the Moon, and the planets move all affect how we operate as well. That’s why the birth chart is so important in astrology. It tells you the exact time and place of your birth, which shows you where everything in the sky was at that precise moment.

Most people are aware of their “Sun” sign- it’s the sign that you know based on your birthday. But your Sun sign doesn’t tell the full story. This is where your moon sign and your ascendant sign (or rising sign), come in to play. These three signs tell you different things about yourself:

Sun – this sign is your “main” character; it is your core self, and what governs your main personality.

Moon – this is our very inner self; it tells you about your true, private feelings when nobody’s around, how you think and act subconsciously.

Ascendant – I like to call this sign the “mask”, or your outer self; it tells you about how others see you, and how you come off to others.

For example, if your Sun sign was Cancer, you would mainly take an emotional approach to things and strive for security- but if your Ascendant was Aquarius, you would present yourself as a more outgoing and adventurous person.

Then there are the zodiac signs. I won’t go through each zodiac sign, but these 12 signs can be grouped into four different elements that can give you a broad overview of the zodiac signs. The website “Astro style” gives a great description of each:

Fire signs: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

“Like fire itself, fire signs tend to be passionate, dynamic, and temperamental. Fire can keep you warm, or it can do great destruction.” — Fire signs are therefore creative and self-assured; just be careful not to set them off!

Earth signs: Taurus, Capricorn, Virgo

“Earth signs keep it real. They are the ‘grounded’ people on the planet, the ones who bring us down to earth and remind us to start with a solid foundation. Slow and steady, these ‘builders’ are loyal and stable, and stick by their people through hard times.” — Earth signs are very grounded and stable; this means they can be very practical but can be too stuck in their ways and too materialistic at times.

Air signs: Aquarius, Libra, Gemini

“Air signs are all about action, ideas, and motion—they are the ‘winds of change.’ When a strong gust hits you, you can’t help but move. Air signs bring everyone a breath of fresh air when things start to get stale.” — They’re the adventurous ones and they like to explore and stay curious; however, because they are literally “in the air”, they need some kind of balance in their lives.

Water signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

“Intuitive, emotional and ultra-sensitive, water signs can be as mysterious as the ocean itself. Like water, they can be refreshing, or they can drown you in their depths. These signs often have intense dreams and borderline-psychic intuition. Security is important to them—after all, water needs a container, or it dries up and disappears” — Water signs are the emotional ones; they are quite sensitive, and they have a lot of empathy for people and can build strong connections with others; however, they can be very indecisive and can get hurt by others easily.

This is a very tiny glimpse into astrology, but I hope that you now at least know what everyone is talking about when they talk about their moon signs and how they have a lot of water signs in their charts. Whether you believe in astrology or not is completely up to you, but if you’re interested in finding out more about your own chart, I personally recommend cafeastrology.com where you can put in your birth time and date to find out more!
