A Royal’s Trip to India: Kate Middleton’s Pedicure & Sexism

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

Beware of sexism! As you might be aware, there have been a number of political affairs that have suddenly turned into sexist, anti-feminist paparazzi endeavours. The latest victim is Kate Middleton.

As the Duchess of Cambridge and wife to Prince William, Kate has her fair share of media attention, which is often centred around some frivolous accusations and somewhat distasteful comments (like repeating an outfit, because it is much more sensible to waste away clothing, obviously).

While this unwarranted attention often induces eye rolls and cues some awkward sighs, the latest scrutiny on Middleton’s lack of pedicure took it too far.

The reason that this was a signal to end the insulting commenting on her appearance was because after attending a momentous, historical political event, Kate was greeted by paparazzi scrutinizing her (unpedicured) feet.

This diplomatic affair took an ugly turn when most people seemed to focus on Middleton’s appearance and make comments on her physique. It went so far that even an educated university professor reportedly acknowledged her unflattering camera angles and noted that she looked better in person.

Kate has met victims of acid attacks, visited shelters, and greeted the Indian Prime Minister. Yet, the most noteworthy aspect about this trip was apparently her feet. Great.

The reason why this appears to be sexist is because nobody seemed to pay this kind of attention to her husband, who accompanied her on this trip. Instead, he was taken far more seriously and not subjected to the same superficial judgement. Instead, people were reminded of his mother’s visit back in 1992 and brought up the peace-making efforts he is trying to push.

The media seemed to congratulate and focus on the international political efforts of Kate’s male counterpart and husband, Prince William. Foreign affairs are an integral part of their political agendas and, like this trip to India, are momentous occasions.

This is why members of the Royal Family, like Kate and William, should be taken just as seriously.

While some paparazzi do indulge in commenting and spectating on celebrities’ lives, the context of this situation show that it has gone too far.

Kate was not there for our entertainment; she was there to celebrate a beautiful and historic moment

However, the analysis of something as insignificant as her unpolished toenails has brought attention to pressing issues and microaggressions that need to be addressed! Kate should not focus on appeasing others.

End the silly sexist comments, please and thank you.
