Mindhunter: Our Obsession With Serial Killers

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

Netflix originals have taken the television industry by storm, from raising awareness of mental health through ‘Thirteen Reasons Why’  to the exposure of an infamous drug cartel in ‘Narcos’. If you’ve binged all the episodes of your favourite show you need to get on the bandwagon and watch Mindhunters. Without a doubt, it will become your new obsession.

True crime as a genre has taken off, from the massive following behind podcasts like ‘Serial’ and Netflix show ‘Making a Murderer’. Mindhunter delves further into this genre with an insider view into the making of a serial killer. What leads a person to commit such a horrendous crime?

Some of us can’t even fathom hurting a fly, yet some people end up committing atrocious acts of violence that baffle us. Mindhunter is the perfect show if you want to get deeper into what goes on in the mind of psychopath. Based on a bestseller book, Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit written by real FBI agents John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker, it is a must watch for those obsessed with criminal psychology.

The series’ portrayal of the 1970s is authentic and really takes you back into an era where serial killers were not even titled as such. FBI agents, Holden Ford and Bill Tench delve into the psychology of killers and thus give life to the criminal profiling section of the FBI. They start interviewing imprisoned serial killers, to build up a profile with the help of psychologist, Wendy Carr.

The acting is phenomenal. From the way the serial killer’s encounters end up affecting the agent’s real lives, it reels you into every episode. As the show is based on real-life events, it makes it so much more relevant. It gives you an unparalleled insight into the killer’s mind shown through famous killers such as Edmund Kemper, Monte Rissell, and Richard Speck to name just a few. Jonathan Groff as Holden Ford is exceptional, his curiosity, the way he builds a rapport with the criminals is mind-blowing. He gets into their minds and speaks their language, making them reveal things they never have before.

Personally, I fell in love with the show and can’t wait for the second season which is currently in the works!
