Fourth Year Diaries: Holiday Cheers

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

Although it feels like Christmas and a break from all of this work is years and year away, the holiday season is just around the corner!  While I’m sure all of you collegiettes are busy writing papers and studying for finals, there is always time to get together with your best girlfriends and celebrate the Christmas season with some cocktails!  In my second year at McGill my roommates and I decided to make some drinks that we had found online to take a break from all of our studying.  Two out of three drinks were pretty disgusting (a word of advice—never make an alcoholic beverage with milk in it) but the memory of that night still has the four of us laughing years later.  Recently I’ve been in Pinterst and discovered some tasty looking drinks that I hope the rest of you will take some time to try out.  Cheers!

Cranberry Martini (serves 2)

1 lime wedge

Red sanding sugar

8 ounces vodka

1 ounce cranberry juice

1 teaspoon vermouth

Skewered fresh cranberries (for garnish)

Rub the rims of 2 martini glasses with a lime wedge, and then dip each rim into a saucer of red sanding sugar, rotating gently to evenly coat.  Chill in freezer at least 10 minutes.  In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, shake vodka, cranberry juice, and vermouth until chilled, about 20 seconds.  Strain into chilled glasses, and garnish with skewered fresh cranberries.

Hot Chocolate Martini (serves 2)

3 ounces homemade hot chocolate, cooled

1 ounce dark crème de cocoa

1 ounce Bailey’s Irish cream

¾ ounce vanilla vodka

3 to 4 miniatures marshmallows

Combine in the hot chocolate, dark crème de cacao, Bailey’s, vanilla vodka in a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake moderately.

Strain into a chilled martini glass.

Drop miniature marshmallows into the glass and roast with a crème brûlée torch, if desired.

Sparkling Pomegranate Cocktail

2 cups pomegranate juice

1 ½ cups lemon seltzer water

½ cup vodka

2 tablespoons fresh pomegranate seeds

Combine pomegranate juice, seltzer water, and vodka.  Pour ½ cup of the mixture into ice filled glass (or keeps all of it for yourself in one huge glass!).  Stir in pomegranate seeds if desired.
