Campus Cutie: Damian Massey-Hirt

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

Aside from the fact that he is a varsity football player at McGill, his quirky and spontaneous personality makes it no wonder that Damian Massey-Hirt is this week’s Her Campus Cutie.

He didn’t want Her Campus McGill to focus on his football career. Right up front, he told us he didn’t want to be defined by football. He was right—he is so much more than just a  regular “jock.”

Wanna know more about him? Here is a little inside scoop Her Campus McGill has brought to you:

Averie Hah for Her Campus McGill (HC McGill): You  must be very busy with your football schedule, but what made you choose your program (major in Economics)?

Damian: I thought it was very practical and punctual. I want to keep up with the rest of the world.

HC McGill: Aside from school, what are you involved in?

Damian: Outside of my busy schedule with all the schoolwork and practices, I used to be a barista at Cafe Depot.

HC McGill: Oh wow, a barista! What about your hobbies?

Damian: I like to relax and play computer games. Actually, I don’t know—I just don’t like titles and restrictions. Sometimes I wanna play video games, sometimes I just go outside.

I’m a spontaneous person and I’ll be doing whatever I want to do in that moment. I don’t have specific things I call “hobbies,” I don’t think.

HC McGill: Do you have a favourite song? Favourite genre of music?

Damian: Hurricane by Bob Dylan. I don’t have a favourite genre, though. I’ll listen to whatever fits my mood.

HC McGill: What about your favourite place to be in Montreal?

Damian: The (Mount Royal) Cross. It’s calm, spiritual, and a nice spot to take a break from everything.

HC McGill: Your favourite food?

Damian: Mussels.

HC McGill: Favourite ice cream flavour?

Damian: Neopolitan.

HC McGill: What’s your favourite thing about yourself?

Damian: My character: my realness, my honesty. Although it can sometimes get me in trouble.

HC McGill: Your favourite TV show?

Damian: I actually watched all the seasons of The Hills. I also enjoyed The Real World.

HC McGill: Who is your celebrity girl crush? Guy crush?

Damian: Gemma Arterton, the girl in Clash of the Titans. I don’t have a celebrity guy crush, though.

HC McGill: Well, what if you got to spend a day with any famous person, dead or alive? Who would you want to hang out with?

Damian: I think Johnny Depp. He has played so many different roles, in such a variety. He seems like a interesting, respectable man while at the same time, being a crazy partier.

HC McGill: Do you have a role model?

Damian: My dad. He is always so calm, and down to earth. I respect that.

HC McGill: Are you taken or single?

Damian: Single.

HC Mcgill: What do you look for in a girl?

Damian: I like interesting people. I look for that special something in a girl that interests and attracts me. I don’t know how to describe it exactly, but I always look for something new, something different.

HC McGill: Then what turns you off?

Damian: Her athleticism? Coordination? The way a girl runs can turn me off.

HC McGill: What’s your idea of a perfect date?

Damian: Somewhere remote and quiet, surrounded by nature, hopefully.

But as I said earlier, I don’t have anything specific in mind. I don’t think about this kind of stuff when living. I just let life happen to me, and look for the unexpected happiness in random moments.

HC McGill: Lastly, what is the craziest thing you’ve done?

Damian: Once, I took out a portion of my student loan to take my best friend to Cancun with me.

HC McGIll: Oh wow, what did you do? Any favourite memories?

Damian: They’re some things that should remain unspoken of. I’m just gonna say that he’s my best friend for life.

HC McGill: Next crazy thing that you want to try and will?

Damian: Free fall, ski diving, road tripping across Canada.
