Brunch Review: Montreal’s “Bagel Etc”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

The best meal of the day is without a doubt brunch. Urban Dictionary defines brunch as a “contraction of breakfast and lunch, usually occurring around the hour of 11 a.m. Typically reserved for snobs and biddies who like tea and jam.” I must say I do love tea and jam.

Living in Montreal, I’ve come to learn that there is no shortage of delicious breakfast and brunch places, but selecting the best restaurant is key. If you haven’t already been to Bagels Etc, it’s time to take a walk up St. Laurent and try it out. Seeing as the food is so delectable, be prepared to wait in line for a little while before you get seated.

Before we get to the food, let’s talk about the restaurant itself. From the outside, Bagel Etc Looks like your everyday diner – but behold and wait until you step inside…

It feels as though you’ve stepped into a 1950s art deco restaurant.

The cool decor creates a warm yet funky atmosphere, but if the interior doesn’t seem enticing enough, wait until you try the food. Their menu has plenty of options, many traditional breakfasts, as well as dishes that have an interesting  and unique spin on them.

My personal recommendation would be to try one of the Eggs Benedict dishes. I ordered the one served on a bagel (seems fitting given the restaurant’s name), with spinach, tomato, and goat cheese underneath the egg, paired with the most perfect potatoes. As you can probably expect from hearing that divine combination, it was a mouth watering meal.

Though the names of the meal concoctions sound fancy and expensive, the pricing is very reasonable considering how incredible the food is. I would definitely recommend going here for a hung-over brunch kinda morning (it will cure you instantly) or taking friends and family here when they come to visit (you can pretend you’re cultured in the Montreal food department), or why not treat yourself and come as a midterm survival reward! And for those fellas out there reading this, it would be an awesome spot for a date.

Enjoy the food and be prepared to want to go back a second, third, or even fourth time!
