Natural Hair Survival Basics

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Marymount chapter.

Who says going natural has to be hard? Here are my top Natural hair care essentials that every Natural girl should own!

1. Coconut Oil

And, yes, I mean the kind you get at the grocery store! Coconut oil is a great way to seal your twist-outs, reduces protein loss in hair, and to promote hair growth. So be in love with that Coco!

2. Spray Bottle

This tool is extremely important in doing twist outs, braid outs… you name it! You always should dampen your hair a bit when doing natural hair style so that you can easily manage your hair and reduce breakage.

3. Wide Tooth Combs

Being a natural girl, you will always use wide tooth combs for detangling your hair on wash day. Using wide tooth combs also prevent breakage and are great at removing dead shed hair.

4. Afro Picks

This is another important tool that allows your top fluff and make your twist outs, braid outs, or puff bigger. This tool can also save you from that dreaded shrinkage look every girl hates.

5. Scarf

Scarves are important in the decorative part of being natural. Sometimes you want accessorize your hair and a nice headscarf can complete the look. You can also use headscarves as a way to be lazy and cover your hair on a bad hair day.
