What better way to get into the Halloween spirit than by binge-watching spooky movies while cuddling with a big bowl of Boom Chicka Pop Kettle Corn? One of my favorite things about the Halloween season is all the great movies that either scare the life out of you or leave you nostalgic about your childhood and Halloweens past. Since bikini season is officially over, now is the time to finally give in to your sweet tooth cravings and fully embrace the wonderful status of a couch potato. Here’s a list of the BEST Halloween movies to see this October, not in any particular order.

Hocus Pocus

For many of us ‘90s babies, this movie is arguably the quintessential Halloween movie. Three witches are accidentally resurrected on Halloween night 300 years after being hung for practicing black magic in 17th century Salem, Massachusetts. Now, Max, Dani and Allison must stop the witches before they achieve immortality. Obviously, when you combine Halloween and Disney, the result is nothing short of pure perfection. Also – did anyone else have a crush on Thackery Binx, or was that just me?

It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown

When I think back to every Halloween when I was growing up, I can’t help but think of this movie. After a long night of trick or treating, my sister and I would sit on the floor of our family room to sort through our newly acquired goodies while nestled up to the fireplace with “It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” playing on the television. While the Peanuts gang celebrates Halloween, Linus waits in a pumpkin patch for the arrival of the Great Pumpkin on Halloween night. Watching this movie will inevitably cause nostalgia to hit you like a ton of rocks (poor Charlie Brown).

HalloweenTown

If you say that you didn’t love to rebel against your parents as a kid, you’re lying. Sneaking out and breaking the rules was half the fun of being a rambunctious youngster. This movie centers on three siblings who aren’t allowed to celebrate Halloween, so they run away with their Halloween-obsessed grandmother who turns out to be a witch! This is the perfect movie to binge-watch since it has not one but THREE sequels. Truly a Halloween hit.

Scream

The original Scream is a must-see classic. Confession – I have to credit half the reason for my love for this movie is the eye candy in it- Billy Loomis played by Skeet Ulrich, *swoons*. In this movie, a Ghostface killer terrorizes high school students in middle-class suburbia. This movie offers a lot of really likable characters, so try not to get too attached because the majority are inevitably murdered. The truly great thing about this movie is its ability to keep viewers on the edge of their seats, trying to figure out who the killer is the entire time. Everybody is a victim, and everybody is a suspect!

Practical Magic

Now if you’re a hopeless romantic like myself, then this is truly the Halloween movie for you! This rom-com centers on two sister witches who share the same curse- every man who falls in love with them dies. Now THAT’S scary! As if it’s not already hard enough trying to find love in this cruel world?! After watching this movie, you will at least be left with a sliver of hope that even you can one day find true love.

Halloween

No Halloween movie guide would be complete without mentioning the classic Halloween with Michael Myers. If you only have time to watch one Halloween movie this month, then make sure it’s this one! Michael Myers escapes the psychiatric hospital he has been locked away in his entire life, to return to his hometown and seek revenge. The scares are found in the nail-biting suspense. This movie truly taught me the key value of always double triple-checking to make sure the bad guy is really dead. Oh, and that the boogie man does exist.

Warm Bodies

Another rom-com made the cut! Are you surprised? This is the timeless tale of star-crossed lovers, but with a spooky twist! Warm Bodies is about a zombie boy who ends up falling in love with a living girl. Because everyone loves a bad boy am I right? This movie has something to offer to all audiences. There is action, adventure, romance, drama, gore and horror! Oh, and did I mention Dave Franco is in it? *double swoon*

Twitches

Another blast from Disney past with this Halloween movie! Teen twin witches who were separated at birth reunite through magic, and must use their powers to save the world in which they were born! Imagine on your 21st birthday, you not only were finally allowed to legally consume alcohol but also discovered you have magical powers…yeah I feel swindled too.

Ghost

This romantic drama stars Patrick Swayze, so nonetheless, it had to be included. In this classic, Swayze is murdered, but his spirit stays behind in efforts to try and warn his lover of impending danger. This movie isn’t “Halloween scary,” but oh boy did it have me in tears. Honestly is there anything more horrifying than your true love dying in your arms?!

Casper

This Halloween movie is not only adorable but also rich with humor. One of the few feel-good movies in the Halloween category! As a kid, this movie definitely helped me convince myself that ghosts are nothing to be scared of since all ghosts are friendly and make amazing friends. This movie will cause your Halloween to truly be a happy one indeed.
