Meet Kristin Musulin

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

From spending time at her sorority house to studying in the journalism building, sophomore Kristin Musulin is sure to be seen all across campus. This month’s Campus Celeb is constantly taking part in an array of activities that she is passionate about.

After starting her freshman year with 44 college credits from high school, Kristin thought she had no choice but to graduate a year early, but after joining a sorority during the winter of her freshman year, she realized she wanted to stay and make the most of her four years in college. With so many credits under her belt from the start, she chose to double major in Journalism and Government and Politics.

Kristin is now the VP of Operations for her sorority, Delta Phi Epsilon. As second in line to president, Kristin is in charge of attendance points at all chapter events in addition to managing the sorority house finances. She has lived in her sorority’s house since the fall 2012 semester and has loved every minute of it. Delta Phi Epsilon’s philanthropy events are also a significant part of Kristin’s involvement with her sorority. “Any time we have a philanthropy event, I get really involved! Last fall, I was very involved with our dance competition, Deepher Dude, in which we coach the fraternities so they can put on a show for students who choose to attend,” she said. Last fall, the Deepher Dude event raised $10,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
In addition to Kristin’s participation in Greek Life, she is also proud to be a member of Students Helping Honduras, a volunteer club on campus with other chapters all across the country at different universities. Through Students Helping Honduras, Kristin has had the opportunity to take two service trips to Honduras during the winter break of both her freshman and sophomore years. Along with other University of Maryland students, Kristin helped build two elementary schools in impoverished villages in the El Progreso region of Honduras.

“I’m 19 years old and I’ve helped build two elementary schools in Honduras, so it’s something I’m very proud of. I’m really glad that I have taken advantage of my time here and taken advantage of the opportunities I have been given. Going to Honduras is not like going on a vacation. It’s a culture shock and it was an incredible way to immerse yourself in the culture of the Honduran people,” Kristin said.

Kristin hopes that her next destination is Africa. She is currently exploring volunteer opportunities in Uganda and plans on making it there this spring break.

In addition to volunteering, Kristin also has a passion for writing. She is currently the stand-in editor for UMD Uloop News, an online publication for college students. She oversees a team of about 25 writers who contribute weekly news articles. As editor, Kristin also acts as the liaison between the director of Uloop News and her writers.

What Kristin loves most about being so involved at school is her extensive network of close friends with all sorts of different interests of their own. “My advice for enjoying college is to meet as many people as you can. I love being able to say hi to ten people on my way to class. Don’t lock yourself in your room because we go to huge school and there are so many people out there that you haven’t met yet,” she said.
