Makeup Trends We’re FALLing For

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

As we say goodbye to our flip-flops, denim shorts and tank tops, we make room for our colorful scarves, woven sweaters and knee-high boots. The same transition should apply to our makeup collections. Contrary to popular belief, makeup, like clothing, changes with the season. So, its time to let go of our shimmery bronzers and pastel shadows and start giving some love to our long lost velvet eyeliners, smoky shadows and bold lip wear!

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a little frightened by lipstick. When I hear the word, I think of the thick maroon paste my grandmother coats onto her lips. Though I love the woman dearly, there are many better ways to make lipstick part of your fashion statement. I have been so inspired by the vibrant hues of red that are showing up over and over again on the lips of models strutting the high-end runways.

This small touch makes the simplest outfit look super sophisticated!  You can go glossy or matte! However, I feel the more accessible look is to gloss over the red. “Like patent leather for your lips, a glossy finish is so very glamorous,” according to harpersbazaar.com.

Another fall makeup trend to love is the purple smoky eye. This is a look Cosmopolitan magazine encourages women to try. It’s wearable for classes during the day or for those flashy nights out. The weightlessness of the purple keeps the smoky eye from becoming too intense.

To put this look together, you will need lavender, medium dark purple and black shadows. Apply the lavender shade to the inner corner of your eyes then blend the deeper purple onto the middle of your upper lid. Last, smudge some black into the outer crease. Because this look is quite colorful, you can go quite minimal with blush and lip-gloss.

Of course, the cat-eye is a look I’m sure many of us are familiar with. It’s been around for some time, but the look is really taking over this year! Now, there is an emphasis on creating a “soft” cat eye.  Cosmopolitan.com says to “try this modern twist on classic winged eyeliner, and blend the edges outwards.”

Line the upper eyelid with black eyeliner and carry the line a little bit past the end of your eye. Then, apply some black eye shadow along the outer end of your eyelid to smoke out the line and make it less harsh. These three appropriate looks compliment any outfit that you don during this brisk season, just be sure to wear them with confidence!
