The Height of Senioritis

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

With spring approaching and the final 2011-2012 school year semester among us, it’s getting harder to stay focused with summer in mind. However hard it may be, nothing is harder than trying to stay on task with graduation a short three months away.

Senioritis is spreading, and it’s only a matter of time before all University of Maryland seniors expecting to graduate in May feel their own little piece of this epidemic.

Senioritis can be defined as lack of motivation to do work, go to class, study—basically anything school related that takes effort and concentration. Senioritis can be blamed on the countless number of years college seniors have been in school all together and the anxiousness to get out or because seniors want to spend the time they have left with their friends having fun. Whatever the reason, some UMD seniors are feeling it already.

“I don’t feel like learning anymore or being graded on everything I do,” senior criminal justice major Chris Kears said. “I also don’t feel like waking up for class.”

Though he has senioritis, Kears said he doesn’t want to graduate into the real world.

Though senioritis may seem inevitable, US News offers some helpful tips to fight the urge to skip class and party when you need to get set on graduating.

According to US News, you should take care of yourself with healthy habits and a good diet, keep organized not with classes but with balancing time and friends, get motivated to stay motivated as you enter the real world, be realistic about the challenges of finding a career after college, and visit the career center to reduce the stress of finding a career and to know how to go about it in the right ways.

Senior biology major Sarah Voelkel is very excited to graduate but keeps her senioritis in check. “I do not think my study habits have changed since my freshman year,” Voelkel said. “This is because I have finally figured out what I want to do after I graduate. I am trying to attend physical therapy school next spring. In order to be a contender I need to raise my GPA so my grades this semester are very important,” Voelkel said.

Though some of Voelkel’s friends have senioritis, she said she doesn’t let them tempt her by staying home on weeknights, going out less this semester, and managing her time better.
