Contouring 101: How to Avoid a Makeup Catastrophe

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

Contour, contour, contour. Contouring is the method of defining your facial features, with the help of makeup. Contouring done correctly will give off the appearance of higher cheekbones and a slimmer nose or chin when it comes to their finished facial look. It’s the latest makeup trend that all of us ladies are trying to perfect.

So, there’s a lot of hype over contouring, but how the heck do you do it?!

Even if you are one of those girls that apply makeup often, like me, contouring is like an art that is only easy for someone that is basically a professional in the makeup industry. If you have tried to practice contouring before and just couldn’t get it quite right, then don’t worry, you’re not the only one! I spent almost two hours watching multiple makeup tutorials on YouTube for how to contour.

I had all the same products as the girls in the tutorials; contour kit, blending brush, foundation, concealer, and highlighter. I followed everything precisely, step by step. But what was my ending result?

A perfected contoured face like Kim Kardashian?

No. A contoured face that went completely wrong that looked like I just splattered paint everywhere? Yes. You might have found yourself looking similar to this picture…

I was so frustrated because I felt like I did all the same things that the girl in the tutorial did! But it is a big trend and we all want to get the look! Even if you haven’t perfected it yet, just keep trying and don’t give up. It will take lots of practice. One thing that helped me was actually going to the MAC counter and practicing how to do it with one of the makeup artists.

Here are a few steps for how to perfect your contour look.

Hopefully after some practice and concentration, you will be turning your contour catastrophes into contour celebrations!
