Why I Go To “So Many Concerts”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Marquette chapter.

Now why would someone want to spend money on something that will only last a few hours on one night? If I told you I drove 8 hours round trip and waited 11.5 hours in 90 degree weather for a 25 minute show, would you think I was crazy? Yeah…probably, and in all honesty, I am. But to me, it’s worth it and now I’ll explain why.

Music and concerts are my escape. Whether I’m happy, sad, stressed, angry, you name it, there’s always a song for any feeling or situation I’m in. They have a way of saying and describing how you feel without being able to get the words out or knowing how to put everything together. No matter where I am or what I’m going through, music is always there.

Music connects people, which is what I love most about it. Everyone on this planet lives a different life and goes through different experiences, yet somehow, we can all connect through this one thing. I’ve met so many amazing people throughout the country and all over the world. I’ve became friends with people online, at radio stations or at shows themselves. Music’s created a bond for all of us. If it weren’t for certain artists and bands, I would have never met some of my best friends today.

Concerts are all about the experience. Everything from hearing a new song and discovering a new artist, to the painful process of getting tickets to their tour and the countless days and months leading up to the show. Then comes the day you’ve been waiting for. You can meet other fans who could potentially become your best friends and finally get to hear your favorite songs by your favorite artist.

When I’m in the venue, there’s a special feeling in the air. It’s filled with excitement, adrenaline, and sometimes even nervousness. Music is one of the few things that gathers hundreds and thousands of people together for the exact same reason. So, for those few hours, nothing else matters. For me, it’s a complete escape. I’m 100% stuck in the moment watching someone do what they love and live out their dream. It’s a few hours of pure joy and happiness, a sense of home.

One of my favorite quotes sums everything up,

“That’s one of the greatest things about music. You can sing a song to 85,000 people and they’ll sing it back for 85,000 different reasons.” ~Dave Grohl

I’ve never once regretted going to a show, only the ones I didn’t go to. So, who knows, maybe one day I can make a career out of this or maybe this will just be another hobby of mine. Despite what some people may say, I’m never going to stop doing something I love and something that makes me so happy.

I challenge you to do the same. Figure out what you’re passionate about and continue to do it. Stop caring what others may think or say, do it because it makes YOU happy. You’ll be so much better off because of it.
