How to be an Environmentally Friendly Human

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Marquette chapter.

Planet earth. We live on it, we learn from it, and we love it… or do we?  Just like us, the earth is aging too, and as humans, we do the utmost to stop ourselves for showing signs of aging or from feeling old, so, why aren’t we doing the same for the planet that is the reason we’re alive in the first place?

The earth has always been and still a beautiful place, don’t get me wrong, but as humans, we take it for granted.  The earth can only accumulate so much trash, lose so many trees, and endure so many air pollutants.  Before we know it, more living beings on this earth will slowly start to disappear.  The earth is deteriorating at this moment; the oceans and landfills are being polluted with garbage, our atmosphere is being filled with car exhaust and fumes which dirty our air, and our fossil fuel energy sources are diminishing.

Because humans are the main reason for the rapid decline of Earth, we have to be the ones to fix it.  It’s obvious that we can’t fix this planet with some magical anti-aging reverse cream, but there are many easy ways to do your part.  Here are just a few simple things you can do to fix your earth:

To reduce trash:

  1. Buy a reusable water bottle and use it!  This will greatly reduce the number of plastic bottles that end up in landfills.  Plus, an insulated bottle will keep your water cold…or your coffee hot (:
  2. If you think your fruit or veggies may go bad soon, freeze them! You can use them in a smoothie at a later date.
  3. Any leftover food scraps can be composted to help fertilize a garden
  4. Use reusable containers! No paper lunch bags, plastic baggies, or straws. To all my Starbucks fans out there: if you can remember to get your coffee in the morning, you can remember to bring your reusable cup.
  5. Bring your own bags to the store.  TJMaxx sells really cute reusable bags at the checkout which somehow makes a shopping spree even better.
  6. Speaking of clothes, donate what you don’t wear or use anymore.
  7. Use direct deposit at work and pain your bills electronically.
  8. RECYCLE- bottles, cans, papers, etc.

To reduce air pollutants:

  1. Drive your car less, carpool, or take public transport.
  2. Similarly, walk or bike to places nearby that you are headed to. By doing this you are not only reducing air pollutants, but you’re also getting a nice exercise (:
  3. If you do have to drive somewhere, combine all your errands into that trip.
  4. Use all-natural products and cleaners.
  5. Quit or don’t start smoking.  It’s bad for the environment and you.
  6. Take care of all plants! They’re the reason we have air to breathe.

To reduce the use of fossil fuels and save energy:

  1. Turn off the lights when you aren’t using them and open the blinds to let in natural light.
  2. Open the windows to let in a natural breeze and fresh air
  3. Water: wash your clothes on cold, shower quicker, turn off the sink when brushing your teeth, fix any leaks or drips in your faucet.
  4. Try and buy energy efficient appliances
  5. Eat more fresh food and less processed food.

The earth needs our help and every positive action counts.  Share your knowledge of helping the environment with friends and family so that they too can make an impact on helping improve the environment. Most importantly, enjoy the outdoors, the sunlight, the fresh air, and all the amazing things this earth has to offer.
