5 Ways to Overcome Homesickness

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Marist chapter.

If you’re feeling homesick, it’s important to know that you are definitely not the only one! No matter if you are a freshman or a senior, everyone finds themselves homesick at some point throughout the year.

With family weekend coming up it will be a great time to reconnect with your parents and siblings and get a little taste of home here at Marist if your friends and family are coming. However, if you are not having any visitors come up for family weekend take the time to get to know people in your building and make new friends! Talk with your RA and ask them if they can plan a program for the people who will not have family here.

Regardless if your family is coming or not though, here are a few ways that can help you overcome your homesickness and make Marist your second home!

1. Talk with your friends about home

It definitely helps to talk about what you are feeling and chances are your friends here will want to talk about their hometown too. You can bond with people here at Marist by talking about your shared experiences.

2. Get involved!

It’s not too late to join clubs! Start going to meetings to learn about what kind of clubs you are interested in and be involved. In addition to clubs, you can join intramurals. The more involved you are on campus, the more comfortable you will feel here and you won’t spend as much time thinking about home. It’s a great way to help you adjust!

3. Stay positive

It will all be ok and you will be happy here. If you stay positive and stay busy, then you will adjust in no time to college life! It is definitely a transition, but by staying positive you will get through it like a champ!

4. Keep connected to friends and family at home

Write letters! Everyone LOVES to get snail mail, so stay in touch with your friends from home by becoming pen pals with them. You can also schedule weekly Skype sessions, but make sure that you don’t spend all of your time talking with friends from home because it is important that you work on developing relationships with people here at Marist too.

5. Make Marist home!

The more connected you are to campus, the better you will feel. Develop relationships with your professors, your advisor, and all of the people around you. Know that everyone around you is either going through the same thing or has gone through the same thing as you. Before you know it, Marist will be your home! Make the most of your four years here because they fly by too quickly!
