With the holiday season fast approaching it’s finally time to start gift shopping for the upcoming holidays. While it may be easy to just go online and start a cart on Amazon and have your gifts in your mailbox in 2 days, you may want to consider shopping small this holiday season instead.

Growing up in a small town, I have always supported small, local businesses as it was the only resource. Now living in NYC, I have grown fond of shopping small, and here is why:

1. You may find unique items or a high diversity of products all at one store

Shopping at any big box store, you will find all the same products with slight differences. At small businesses, the products are unique, typically being handmade. You’ll get a one of a kind piece that’s not just something that anyone can pick up off the rack at their local mall. These types of products make the best gifts, and you know the person you are giving it to won’t already have it!

2. Small businesses have amazing customer service

There’s nothing worse than going shopping and not being able to get the help you need from an associate or having to deal with lines wrapped around the store. Customer service is everything to small businesses, as it is such an important part of their representation. From the moment you step into a small business, you will feel welcomed and be able to locate help when needed. The workers are also typically super knowledgeable about their products and will help make your shopping experience personal. You will definitely leave with gifts for everyone on your list when shopping small!

3. You are directly supporting your community

When you buy from small businesses, you are directly supporting someone in your community. The products you shop are made by someone in your community and the money is going directly to them. Shopping small is the best way to directly help your community’s economy and labor force.

Before you start shopping for the upcoming holidays, check out your local small businesses to find unique products and directly support people in your community!
